Giants Notebook: Osi Returns With More Questions Than Answers

Posted By Chris Ryan On Aug 16 2011 @ 6:24 pm In New York Giants | 3 Comments

  • The big story coming out of Giants camp this weekend was that disgruntled Pro Bowler Osi Umenyiora returned to the practice field after having disputes with his current contract. While the word is that Osi is happy to be back and ready to focus on the field, the issues regarding his contract have not been settled and could possibly become a distraction for Big Blue. The good news out of all of this is that even though the dollars don’t make sense to Osi, he’s back on the field which is where the New York defense needs him to be.
  • The Giants struggled to get any offensive production in their 20-10 loss to Carolina in their first preseason game Saturday night. Eli Manning had no scoring drives in any of his five offensive series. The only touchdown New York had was a Michael Boley 56 yard interception return. The team never really found any rhythm with their running nor passing game. A small bright spot was backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels going 13/19 and passing for 129 yards. New York plays their next preseason game next Monday night against the Chicago Bears.
  • The running game was much maligned surprisingly by the Carolina defense. The duo of Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw will be relied on through the season to carry the load with an inexperienced wide receiving core. Both will probably get more reps against the Bears and get their chances against a playoff team from last year.
  • Kicker Lawrence Tynes continued his struggles from last season, missing two field goals and having another one blocked. Tynes also rolled his ankle, but head coach Tom Coughlin assured that he was fine. Special teams was a key contributor to the Giants downfall last season, so it’s imperative that Tynes and newly acquired punter Steve Weatherford work out the kinks prior to the start of the regular season.
