Buc Wild: 3 Reasons to Love Preseason Football

There’s an awful lot to complain about when it comes to preseason football. You can talk about the low quantity of playing time for the stars, or the low quality of play from the scrubs. You can gripe that there’s too many preseason games. You can complain about (and justifiably so) the ticket prices being the same in preseason as they are in the regular season.

But at the end of the day, it’s still football and the preseason offers a few things you’ll never see during the regular season.

Here now… 3 reasons to love preseason football.

1. THE ANNOUNCING: Preseason is the only time you get to hear unabashed homerism coming from the announce booth. These announcers talk like every new rookie or free agent was a steal and that their team is on the path to the Super Bowl. I loved listening to the Philly announcers talk about Michael Vick like he was the second coming or the Chiefs announcers make excuses about why their team was being blanked by the Buccaneers.

Unlike baseball that has them pretty much year round, it’s the only time in football when teams have home announcers on TV. The homerism inspires pride in the faithful and insights the haters. Either way it’s passion and how can that not be a good thing?

2. THE NAMES: Once you get to the 4th quarter of a preseason game it’s literally like watching the guys from a Madden draft class… if Madden decided it was going to create completely unbelievable names. Which of these following rookies are actual players and which one did I make up?… Mister Alexander, Shaky Smithson, Scooter Berry, Tysson Poots, Jock Sanders, Duke Lemmens.

The answer: I didn’t make any of them up.

How great is it to hear the announcers say “great play by Mister Alexander!” It just sounds so formal.

3. IRRATIONAL FAN LOVE: ”Tim Tebow doesn’t have accuracy problems, he went 6/7 against the Cowboys!”

“New England found its running back, Stevan Ridley scored 3 TDs against the Jags!”

“Washington doesn’t need a star (or even good) QB, they just beat the Steelers!”

“So what if our starters fumbled the ball away twice, the Chiefs have nothing to worry about. It’s only preseason!”

I’m pretty sure every one of these statements was made following the first week of the preseason. This kind of irrational preseason fan love is great. Not only does it make for ridiculous debates, it will also lead to someone in your fantasy league taking Tim Tebow as their QB.

I’m not saying fans shouldn’t be excited or concerned about their teams, but it’s a little early. Just remember, last year the 49ers went 4-0 in the preseason and finished 6-10 in the regular season. Meanwhile, the Colts never seem to win in the preseason.

Time to get Buc Wild now…

BUCS/PATRIOTS

Here’s what I’m watching for…

- Gerald McCoy gets on the field for the first time since being hurt last year. During the offseason he became the leader of the defense. Let’s see how that translates on the field. Hopefully, he only adds to the emerging pass rush we saw last week.

- LeGarrette Blount caught one ball last week. I want to know if the Bucs plan on making him more a part of the passing game. Also there seems to be questions at RB behind Blount. Is Lumpkin the guy?

- Will Tom Brady play? Last week the Chiefs pretty much mailed it in (or so they’d have you believe) and Tampa crushed them. I want to see our new look defense against one of the best offenses in the league. I for one hope Brady plays, I want to see the Bucs get a true test.

Unfortunately, I’ll have to wait until the replay on NFL network before I can truly get Buc Wild this week.

Let me know what you think and follow me on twitter @buc_wild

Thursday night was ugly! I know it’s only preseason but…..Freeman had a rough night, not one of better games. Just wondering, was Brady ever touched?

NE ran all over TB, that will be a problem for the Bucs all year, stopping the run. Of course, putting pressure on the opposing QB will be a season long issue as well. The offense is far ahead of the “D”. When did that happen last in Tampa?

I still would like to see The Glazers spend a little but wishful thinking on my part.

Definitely ugly. Two things about the pass rush, I actually thought McCoy & Clayborn got decent pressure on Brady, but the Pats just get the ball out really fast. Got a couple of hits on him. Also we’re still playing with sort of a patchwork line without Miller or Price. And Bowers is still working to get up to speed. I’d really like to see all these guys together at some point.

As for the run stopping… I’m hoping that will come. On a few of those long runs, the Bucs were in the right place and Woodhead just made a great play (that dude is quick as hell). Still we certainly struggled to stop the run, just like last year. My hope is, as Foster learns his position he will be more of a run stuffer. Barrett Ruud was bad at stopping the run and this is why we have Foster now.

My biggest concern from that game was the O-line. It looked like Freshman versus varsity out there. I showed the game to my wife, and I think after the first few plays she covered her eyes with each snap. Ted Larsen was getting tossed around like a rag doll. If he doesn’t show more in the next game, maybe we need to get Zuttah back out there. Though Penn played well though.

McCoy was solid, totally agree with you. He might have been the only that showed up. I have a feeling Clayborn and Bowers (not much confidence in Bowers at the moment) will struggle early in the season and Bowers might struggle the entire season. Bowers at one time was supposed to be one of the top picks in the draft and his knee scared a lot of teams away. I’m not sold on that pick. Bowers never stood out to me when I watched Clemson play. Watching him play on the tube (of course you can’t see it all) it looked like he took some plays off, he didn’t totally dominate. That scares me! Clayborn on the other hand was a solid pick by the Bucs. Kirk Ferentz at Iowa has turned out his fair amount of solid pros over the years. Coaches in the NFL are always raving about players from Iowa, how fundamentally sound they are. Props to Ferentz and his staff.

Foster will have some “eye opening” plays but he’ll also have those “oh no” he’s still wet behind the ears plays. As Bill Parcells would say about some rookies “he’s a ball in tall grass”…translation– lost. That could be the case with Foster throughout the 2011 season. Perhaps Foster will have that “I get it moment” during the season and stop thinking out there, that is what gets the rookies in trouble. Not to mention the speed out there. Clayborn and Bowers have already mentioned the speed and they haven’t even played in a regular season game yet.

Penn is a beast and he’s the least of my worries, plays with a nasty attitude and I like that.

Woodhead (Rex Ryan still regrets getting rid of him) is a perfect fit for NE. The Pats look like they will have another 12-14 win season, but with them, it’s what they do come January.

TB in 2011…8 or 9 wins. I think Atl. is the team to beat in the division and maybe the NFC. Love the idea of Julio Jones in Atl. Solid move by the Falcons.

The Bucs also need someone other than Williams and Winslow to emerge, take the heat off of those two. Will Benn??? I would have liked to seen the Bucs grab a veteran WR but that would mean they would have to spend some $$$$$ and that isn’t going to happen anytime soon.
