Wright And Pagan Lead Mets To Victory Over Padres

The New York Mets had two big innings on Wednesday night and went onto defeat the San Diego Padres 7-3 at Petco Park in San Diego.   That win had some meaning behind it, with the victory the Mets won the series and that was the first time the New York Mets have won a series in San Diego in over nine years, which I find a little shocking.

The New York Mets were the first to hit the scoreboard and did it in a big way in the third inning.  With Angel Pagan and Willie Harris already on base David Wright hit a Matt Latos fastball over the left field wall and just like that New York led the game 3-0.  Matt Latos would just as soon forget this season as his record dropped to a dismal 6-12, completely opposite to last year where he was the leader of the pitching staff.  David Wright now has 10 home runs on the season and is only the second New York Met to hit at least 10 bombs in his first eight seasons.

New York increased their lead to 4-0 in the seventh inning.   Once again Angel Pagan figured in the scoring, with Ruben Tejada on base Pagan grounded out and Tejada scored to increase the Mets lead to four.  In the bottom of the seventh San Diego finally got on the scoreboard when Aaron Cunningham doubled and that allowed Orlando Hudson to score from second base.

The Mets put the game on ice in the eighth inning when they scored three more runs and built their lead to 7-1.   Angel Pagan had three RBIs on the night, his single allowed Jason Bay and Justin Thole to score.  Willie Harris drove in the final run of the night for New York, his single allowed Scott Hairston to score and put the game out of reach.  San Diego scored two runs in the ninth to make the score closer, the Padres home record dropped to a disappointing 24-38.   San Diego hosts Florida on Thursday at Petco Park to start a four game weekend series.

In other Padres news they signed 3 of their top 6 draft picks before Monday night’s deadline.  They signed two right-handed pitchers and a catcher as they hope they will help San Diego get back in the hunt in the future.
