At least for one game, Angels on the Mark

The Texas Rangers have been around since 1972. In those 39 years they have never swept a 4 game series in Anaheim. That streak is still intact, thank’s to Mark Trunbo’s walk off 2 run home run in the bottom of the 9th on Thursday. Angels salvaged 1 of the 4 games, win 2-1.

Jered Weaver is back to looking like….Jered Weaver. 1 run allowed in 7 innings of work for the ace of the staff.

The offense, which didn’t look good Wednesday, didn’t look much better on Thursday, until the 9th. Up to that point, the Angels had scored 1 run, with only 9 hits in their last 16 innings. One swing of the bat changed all that. I like the fact that Trumbo hit it off Mike Adams, who the Rangers acquired to solidify their bullpen for the final 2 months.

I thought the Halos had a shot to win Wednesday’s game as well, jumping on CJ Wilson for 2 runs in the first inning. Unfortunately, that’s was the best the Halos offense could do. They picked up all of 1 run the rest of the game.

Ervin Santana pitched a heck of a game. He didn’t have his best stuff, but he still gave his team a chance to win. What he almost accomplished in the 8th inning… Bases loaded, no out, he strikes out Torrealba and Endy Chavez before Ian Kinsler’s bloop single gave Texas the runs they needed to win the game.

Vernon Wells went 0-5 n the two games, making him 1-13 in the 4 games. Way to clutch up man. 2 for 36 in your last 10 games. With the cash he is pulling down, he might be the worst money player in Angels history. It is August 18th and the 26 million dollar man is hitting .200, with 17 home runs, and 46 RBI. Since the ASB he has 5 big flies, and 12 RBI.

So the Angels optioned out Tyler Chatwood, and recalled Hank Conger. Why? Chatwood may not be pitching as well as he did earlier, but he’s the future, Joel Pineiro and Jerome Willans are not. Pineiro will be gone at the end of the year, and so will Williams–I’ll get to him in a minute.

For the love of everything human, can the Jeff Mathis experiment end. The man can’t hit. 2 strike outs for Mathis on Wednesday, the 2nd coming with Peter Bourjos on 3rd in the 5th inning. The fans actually booed him..Shocked me too.

He looks even worse with Mike Napoli sitting in the opposite dugout. Napoli’s home run on Wednesday was the only run the Rangers scored, but in the 4 games he went 7-19 (.368), with 2 home runs. I don’t understand why the fans booed Napoli when he hit the home run, or cheered when he struck out. Napoli didn’t ask to be traded, maybe play a little more, but he never made a ruckus. You should be booing the person/people responsible for letting him go, for Wells nonetheless.

What I would do now, is put Conger behind the plate and see how he responds the rest of the year. What do they have to lose.

Peter Bourjos gets better by the game. He has now added bunting to his repertoire. He laid down a couple in the final 2 games. One was too soft, but the other was perfect. And did you see him go from 1st to 3rd on the wild pick off attempt? He ran in to Napoli, but still made it 180 feet without a throw. Could he be the fastest guy in baseball?

It looks like the Angels will start Williams on Sunday. 2 of the 3 Ranger batters he faced crushed the ball off him on Wednesday. Baltimore is not a good team, so we’ll see what he can do. He once was a hot prospect, but I think the Halos are just throwing things, anything, against the wall to see what sticks. I don’t have high expectations, but I have been wrong before.

Sorry to see Reggie Willits DFA’d. He barely got a chance with the Halos after his break out performance a few years ago. I know he’s no Wells, but I think he can play the game. I hope he gets a chance somewhere else.

For being one of the best defensive teams in the AL, the Angels sure threw the ball around a lot. 5 errors in 4 games for the Halos. They could have had 6, if Trumbos bad throw to 2nd after Craig Gentry was picked off Thursday, was called an E.

Why didn’t the Rangers just trade Michael Young to the Rockies like they were supposed to. Young went 10-17 (.588) with 5 RBI. I swear to you, every time I looked up he was on base. I thought he batted .1000

There are still 37 games to play, and the Halos only trail by 6 games, but it is gonna be an Everest type climb for them to catch, and jump, this Texas team.

In the 4 games, the Rangers did everything better than the Angels. I am glad the Angels won on Thursday, but you have to do better offensively, as game winning home runs aren’t gonna happen very much.

Torii Hunter has 16 game hitting streak. See, I am ending on something positive.

Angels get the O’s, while the Rangers are in Chicago. Hopefully, the Sox can cool off the Rangers a bit.

Go Angels!!
