‘Dream Team’ Nightmare

Heinz Field in Pittsburgh was the site for the Philadelphia Eagles nightmare Thursday, as the Steelers defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 24-14 in NFL preseason action. The game failed to live up to the hype of a nationally televised matchup between the defending AFC Champion Steelers and the ‘Dream Team’ assembled in the short offseason by Philadelphia.
The Steelers looked to be in mid-season form as Ben Roethlisberger threw for two first half TD’s in leading the Steelers to a 14-0 half time lead. The first touchdown went to Antonio Brown to put the Steelers up 7-0 following a 14-play drive that consumed 7:36 on the game clock in the 1st quarter. A second 14-play drive culminated in a 20-yard TD pass to Hines Ward in the back of the end zone in the 2nd quarter. Roethlisberger led Pittsburgh’s offense on 28 snaps, finishing 8-12, 125 yards and 2 TD’s passing and 272 yards of total offense.
The Eagles looked like it was the second game of the preseason as Michael Vick could only manage 5 of 12 passing including 3 INT’s. Pittsburgh was able to pressure Vick into repeated miscues in the passing game on defense, holding the Eagles to only 71 yards of total offense in the first half. Philadelphia was able to score late on two Mike Kafka TD passes of 14 and 7 yards.
Philadelphia made big news with several big name signings following the NFL lockout, including, former Raider Nnamdi Asoughma, former Packer Cullen Jenkins and former 1st rounder from the Titans Vince Young. The Eagles have plenty of work to do if this ‘Dream Team’ they have assembled will be staking claim to the Lombardi Trophy come February. Pittsburgh served preseason notice to the rest of the NFL that the Steelers are a formidable contender.
The Eagles should have known they were in for a rough night at the time the National Anthem was performed by 11-year old CJ Coyne from the Pittsburgh Children’s Festival Chorus. Did anyone notice that the pre-teen was toting a Terrible Towel and wearing a Hines Ward jersey? He scored a perfect ten in my book. Magnificent…take notes Christina Aguilera.
