Angels, led by Williams, play real well…and they play Wells.

I could make this entire blog about Vernon Wells, but that wouldn’t be fair to Jerome Williams now, would it?

Come on, who among you thought Williams would pitch 1 run ball for 7 innings today? Yes, the Orioles are a bad team, just playing out the string, but Williams looked real good. Changing speeds, moving the ball around, even pitching out of a tough 4th inning jam.

Williams came out of the box strong, retiring the first 9 Orioles, 4 on strikes. But I was reserving judgement until after the O’s saw him a 2nd time. Yes, the first 3 Baltimore hitters got hits in the 4th, but 2 were broken bat specials, and the other was an infield jobber, so I wasn’t too worried. Williams bore down and got out of the inning unscathed by striking out Vlad, and getting a nifty 3-6-1 double play. Great pitching, and great win for a guy who hadn’t won a big league game since 2005. He is now 2-0 lifetime vs. the Orioles.

Torii Hunter’s 18 game hit streak is now Kaput, thank’s to Adam Jones. Jones robbed Hunter of a home run in the 4th. It was mentioned that Hunter has tutored Jones in the past Obviously a little too good. Jones should know better, you should never show up your mentor, it’s just not right. It’d be like Daniel beating up Mr. Miyagi–shouldn’t happen–haha.

In a weird coincidence, Hunter was the only Angel to not get a hit on Sunday.

Peter Bourjos streak is now at 8 straight. Bourjos hit a home run in his 3rd straight game. All told he went 3-5 to raise his overall batting average to .286., the highest it’s been since May 8th.

I’ve been hyper critical of the Angels catching situation, but I think I’ll reserve judgement on Bobby Wilson. There’s just something about him I like.

Loved the Angels 2 out offense. They scored nearly half their runs with 2 outs on Sunday. That kind of production will win you a lot of games.

Now to Wells. Once again he proved why he is the highest paid Angel.

2nd inning; Reaches on an error by O’s 3rd baseman Blake Davis. On what appeared to be a hit and run, Erick Aybar flies out to right. Wells just keeps running, and get’s doubled off. He looked over his shoulder twice to find the ball, but still kept running. The last time I saw that was at a tee-ball game, but the players were 5 years old, and continually ran to third. I haven’t seen Wells do that. At least not yet.

3rd inning: Wells pops it up to left. It should have been the ole can of corn for Felix Pie, who camps under it, then loses it in the sun.The ball dropped at his feet. To me, an obvious error, but it was surprisingly ruled a hit. FYI, there are two out, and Wells steals 3rd. What’s that old baseball adage? Don’t make the 1st, or last out at third. Anyhow, Wells got the steal, and scored when Craig Tatum threw the ball in to left. Once again, last time I saw that was when I played in the Bronco league. I got thrown out, and benched.

6th inning: What would an Angel game be without a Wells strike out?.

8th inning: Shallow pop-up between short and left. Wells is screaming he has it, so Aybar moves away. What does Wells do? He drops the ball. Really?

Angels get a well deserved day off before entertaining the White Sox on Tuesday. I’ve considered going out to the Tuesday game, but the people I was gonna go with, can’t make it. Damn!!

Rangers start a 4 game home series against the Boston Red Sox tomorrow. I can’t believe I’m gonna say this, but Go Sox!!

The Halos only trail Texas by 4 games.

Go Angels!!
