From the beginning of the season, until now, I have said over and over that the Angels won’t be able to resign Jered Weaver after next year. No, not because they won’t pony up the money, but because Scott Boras will take them for a ride. I was wrong (again).
Going by past history, there was nothing that led me to believe that Boras would let a premium client sign before he is able to test the open market. Boras is a tough negotiator, and always tries, and normally gets, above market value for his clients. Weaver is jewel of a client to Boras, but he obviously took a shine to Anaheim.
The rumored deal is reportedly worth $85 million over 5 years. I am sure Weaver, being a Southern California guy, pushed this deal along.
Saying that everything stayed the same, could Boras have extracted more money from another team after the 2012 season? No question. But the heart wants what the heart wants, and I think Weaver just wanted to be close to the only place he knew.
So Weaver is signed through 2016. Ervin Santana through 2013, and Dan Haren through next year. With the continued development of Tyler Chatwood, Garret Richards, and maybe even Jerome Williams, the Angels should have an imposing rotation for years to come.
In just over 5 years in the bigs, Weaver has a 78-45 record, with a 3.30 ERA. This season Weaver has taken his game up a notch, compiling a 14-6 record, with a sparkling 2.10 ERA.
They don’t have to worry about it now, but there is still one very big Boras client on the Angels roster. I am talking about Kendrys Morales. Nice to have Mark Trumbo as a fallback option there.
Weavers next start is Wednesday against the White Sox. The Angels are expected to announce Weavers signing on Tuesday.
Great day to be an Angels fan.

O'kay I'll talk about myself a little. I've been working in the television/radio industry for over 21 years. I started at 2 so I am just a tad over 21 (That is a joke). My career has taken me around and and even out of the United States. Right now I call Vegas home, but I just never know where life will take me next. Until 2002 my irrational love for the California/Anaheim/LAA had taken me down some very dark roads, but with Arte Moreno in charge I finally saw the a light at the end of the road. I really love most every sports and having as much fun as possible.
