As the preseason reaches its halfway point, we fans look at our favorite teams and wonder if their preseason performances indicate a good season or a bad season. The Falcons have had a sub par preseason thus far, but that hardly means that they will have a bad season.
The Falcons are currently 0-2 this preseason. As we all know, this year’s offseason was cut short because of the lockout. The preseason started just a few weeks after the offseason had officially started. Most teams haven’t gotten a good chance to look at their new players the way they wanted to. This is true for the Falcons.
In April, the Falcons moved up high into the first round of the NFL Draft to pick Julio Jones, the star wide receiver from Alabama. This was seen as a risky move, but one of the highlights of this preseason has been Julio Jones’ play.In these first games, he has showed flashes of brilliant speed and hands. He has to be a key factor this offseason, and so far it’s so good.
In the start of the offseason, the Falcons signed free agent Ray Edwards to help a defense that needed have in the pass rush/pass defense department. So far, Ray Edwards has not been able to play, as he is recovering from injury. However, the Falcons have been able to show that in some cases, they can get a good pass rush without Edwards and with only a four-man rush. This is a good thing for the Falcons.
Finally, another key aspect is how the returning players will play. Matt Ryan is looking sharp. Michael Turner has shown aspects of his old self, which is good for the Falcons. Brent Grimes has shown proof that his Pro Bowl appearance last year was no fluke. The Linebacker core and Secondary look ready to take down opposing offenses. The only concern I have is the play of the offensive line. RG Harvey Dahl was lost to the Rams in the offseason, and Garrett Reynolds and Mike Johnson have been put in to replace him. So far, the OL has yet to completely gel together like they should but I expect that they will be fine once September comes.
More updates on the Falcons preseason to come soon.
