Cowboys vs Chargers Preseason

Philip Rivers and the Chargers were in Dallas for week 2 of preseason where we saw a slightly larger portion of 1st team offenses. We saw the Dallas D, now under Rob Ryan, improve a bit as they begin to settle into the new 3-4 scheme that is in place. We also saw Romo looking like he is comfortable running the offense, despite a bad interception where he was picked off by Chargers safety Eric Weddle who watched him stare down target Kevin Ogletree.
Ogletree got the start with starter Miles Austin nursing a hamstring injury with moderate results as he continues to fight for the 3 string wide receiver position with rookie 6th round pick Dwayne Harris, who went without a reception after going for 127 yards and 2 TDs against Denver in the preseason opener.
Dallas’ run game probably stood out the most with starter, Felix Jones, showing that he is not just about his speed as he ran for 56 yards on 7 carries shedding blockers on multiple plays. Also, Phillip Tanner probably had the highlight of the night when he took a hand off to the left end where he broke a tackle and through the line all the way to end zone, but the play was called dead because he lost his helmet.
Tanner has looked very good through all of preseason and will give the coaches something to think about. It’s not all that unreasonable to think that Tanner could take Lonyae Miller’s back up role as well as lead to Tashard Choice being cut if he continues to play at the level he is playing.
It was interesting to see that the Chargers first play was a dump off screen to former Cowboy, Patrick Crayton, and also thrown right in front of the Cowboy’s bench as if to say, “Hey. Look what your missing out on”. Crayton was traded at the end of last season and Norv Turner may have been giving him an opportunity to unload a chip on his shoulder, though Crayton dropped the pass.
Dallas will be in Minnesota next Saturday to square off with an old rival in Viking’s quarterback Donovan McNabb.
