Big Black and Blue: Injuries Continue to Pile Up for Giants

It has gotten to the point of Giants fans cautiously asking—-”Who’s next?”

The Giants, prior to their 41-13 preseason over the Bears Monday night, found out that disgruntled Pro Bowler Osi Umenyiora will need arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and will likely miss the season opener Sept. 11 against Washington. After all the contract disputes he has had this preseason, the team will have to wait on his return to see if he truly earns his pay.

Big Blue was also dealt multiple blows to their secondary in the game Monday night. Most notably, starting cornerback Terrell Thomas went down in the second quarter after colliding with Jason Pierre-Paul on a pass rush. Thomas returned to the locker room, where word got out that his ACL was torn and will be out for the entire season. Corner Brian Witherspoon also had to be brought back for x-rays after hurting his knee. It was determined that he would also be lost for the season.

These injuries on the defensive end include first round draft pick Prince Amukamara who will be out for the first month of the regular season. Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell now has his hands full filling the voids that the injuries have created. Right now, the thin secondary consists of just Aaron Ross and Corey Webster at the corners with safety Antrel Rolle taking reps as well. Both Lito Sheppard and Brian Williams are slated to work out with the team for a shot at a contract. Look for GM Jerry Reese to sign one of these two this week.

Moving forward this preseason, the Giants focus their sights on their intra-stadium rival Jets Saturday night. It will be the return of former Giants receiver Plaxico Burress, who signed with Gang Green after serving his prison sentence. Burress’ presence will likely juice up the rivalry this season.
