Who’s Our No. 1? Roy Williams Job in Jeopardy

CHICAGO – As a Chicago Bear, Roy Williams has yet to catch a pass in a preseason game.  As a result, Williams finds himself in a position battling for the number one spot with Johnny Knox. Usually, a battle for position distinguishes someone becoming strong and good enough to compete for the starting role, but this situation is different. Chicago Bears wide receiver Coach Daryl Drake has expressed his frustration with Roy on his lack of focus and where he stands with his physical conditioning:

“Not where he [Williams] needs to be, and he knows that. He and I have talked about that. And the good thing about it is, you got Johnny Knox who is fighting and working hard. And believe you and me, [Williams] also understands that Johnny is there, and Johnny is hungry, and Johnny wants his spot back. And if things don’t start changing, then Johnny is going to be in there. Heard it straight from the horse’s mouth.”

I bet Roy did not see this coming. Roy entered training camp thinking the number one receiver spot was automatically his. Meanwhile other Bear receivers such as Knox are working hard; Roy doesn’t consider himself physically in game shape [1].

Knox is beginning to receive a lot of praise from Coaches Daryl Drake and Mike Martz. This past offseason, Knox added ten pounds of muscle [2] to become a more physical and bigger player. Knox led the Bears in receiving yards last year with 960 yards and is looking to repeat that role this year.

Knox is looking to lead the Bears in yards again.

“Johnny is right now practicing and playing better than he has since I’ve been here,” Martz said. “Of all the receivers, he might have made the most improvement here in camp.”

I am happy for Knox fighting for the number one position and I wish him the best of luck.

Seriously though, what were the Bears thinking?

Mike Sims-Walker expressed interest in wanting to join the Bears

The Chicago Bears entered the offseason free-agency needing to upgrade their wide receiver corps with the addition of a proven player. Some of the receivers that were free-agents included: Mike Sims-Walker, Sidney Rice, Steve Smith (NYG), Plaxico Burress, Steve Breaston, Santonio Holmes, Braylon Edwards, James Jones, and Randy Moss to name a few.

The Bears answered by signing former Cowboy Roy Williams. This guy is supposed to be the answer as their go-to guy, their No. 1 receiver, the playmaker, the guy who will score all the TD’s. All this is envisioned because of the media lauding over the fact that Roy and Martz are finally back together. With the Lions, Martz had Roy produce his career-best season in 2006. Roy finished with 1,310 yards and 7 TD’s.

I do not expect Roy to have as a productive season as that. In the three seasons with the Cowboys, Roy managed to accumulate only 1,324 yards and 13 TD’s. Not the most enticing numbers when this guy was once considered to be the one of the best receivers in the league. Seeing what Roy has shown me with his lack of physical conditioning and not even catching one pass in a preseason game, he will not lead the Bears in any receiving category this season.

My prediction is Johnny Knox will finish the year with 1,118 receiving yards and Earl Bennet will lead the team with 6 receiving TD’s.

WHAT’S YOUR PREDICTION?
