Penn State begins its 125th season this Saturday against the Sycamores (yes, I had to look that up), but since last year, unfortunately not much has changed in Happy Valley. The Nittany Lions still have two quarterbacks, which if you listen to Mike Ditka like I do, means they don’t have a quarterback.
Sophomore Rob Bolden is back, and the news of his demise was greatly exaggerated. Junior Matt McGloin is back too, so now what? One player has to lead this team on offense – not two. It surprises me that when Bolden was ready to walk at the end of last year, Joe Paterno didn’t let him, and instead, encouraged him to come back, only to again have a QB by committee.
Sure, PSU has some schedule padding with Temple and a few others, but if anyone’s going to take them seriously this year, they’ll have to beat at least two of the four powerhouses in their future, specifically: Alabama (#2), Nebraska (#10), Ohio State (#18), Wisconsin (#11). Basically, they have to be able to defeat ranked teams. I’m not so sure this team can do that.
