Dirty Bird Blog: Injury Bug Bites

The Montreal Alouettes suffered a major loss this past weekend in Calgary.  Not so much on the scoreboard but in the form of Mark Estelle.  He was hurt recovering a fumble and while many remain hopeful he’ll be back by season’s end, the Alouettes will miss his presence on the field as one of the premier corners of the CFL.

Estelle’s injury is just one of many that have befallen the Alouettes this season. At the risk of making excuses, it seems that whenever the Alouettes suffer a loss this season, an injury was the catalyst for the team’s falter in play. And even wins have produced serious injury. So far this season the following have lost playing time due to injury:

Kerry Watkins – Started the season on the disabled list due to off-season nasal surgery.

Jerald Brown – Out for the season after leg injury in the first game

Jamel Richardson – Missed game due to hamstring injury

Anthony Calvillo – Left game after having vision problems

Etienne Boulay – Out with lingering concussion issues

Add to that list injuries to Josh Bourke, J.P. Bekasiak, Jermaine McElveen, Tim Maypray, Shea Emry, John Bowman along with long-term injuries to Marc-Olivier Brouillette & Danny Desriveux and it’s a miracle we are still able to field a team with a winning record. And each injury means a replacement which takes time to establish a flow with teammates. You can learn a lot in practice, but there’s no sure-fire way to avoid injuries.

So now Montreal has a tough road to hoe…back-to-back games versus Hamilton then our first meeting with the sudden powerhouse known as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Both teams can be beaten, but Hamilton has been inspired in recent weeks and Winnipeg’s D has been beyond impressive. This won’t be an easy couple of weeks, but if Montreal can step up to the challenge and TRY to stay healthy, they will be more than fine.

Despite my best efforts to drum up support for the Alouettes Fan Train, not many tickets have been sold. I’m still not entirely sure why Labour Day weekend was chosen to do this game as it’s not typically the best weekend for most fans due to it being the end of summer. And normally it’s Toronto vs. Hamilton on Labour Day. This coming weekend is normally reserved for rivalries such as the Battles of Ontario & Alberta along with the Banjo Bowl.

In an effort to shake thing up, the league switched this weekend up and now BC plays Toronto (I guess you can call that the Braley Bowl) while Montreal plays Hamilton.  First person to come up with a clever name for that match-up wins nothing. Thanks for playing.

But if you have no plans for Labour Day weekend, head on up to the Hammer to see the Alouettes play. The fan train people will be seated in Box G at Ivor Wynne, so try to snag tix there to be with fellow Alouettes fans. The great fellas from LesGarsQuiVivent.com will be doing a special tailgate party at Scott Park in Hamilton, mere steps from the stadium. A good time will be had by all, of this I am sure.

I’ll be back later this week with a preview of next Monday’s clash as well as a look at the Alouettes in practice.

GO ALS GO!!!
