This game should solidify who the Redskins want to start. John Beck played the entire first half and the 2nd half was shared by M Gutierrez and K Clemens. Rex Grossman was rested. Beck didn’t play well. Grossman will start against the Giants, unless they’re trying to play mind tricks with them.
The Redskins first possession of the game started with an incomplete pass by Beck, then a fumble by R #25 RB Evan Royster, which is recovered by the Bucs and taken all the way to the goal line. The Redskins’ D, however, prevented any points off of that. Next up for the D is a sack on Carpenter by #50 LB Rob Jackson for loss of 11 yards, fumbles then recovered by Washington. Beck then fumbles, but recovers, and Rookie Royster makes up for his previous fumble by running a TD to score first. 7-0 Redskins.
At the start of the 2nd quarter, Brandon Banks back from injury returns 95 yards for a TD. In most of his previous TD returns, there have been flags, this time a review on a possible fumble by Banks, but upheld. 14-0 Redskins. Add a FG and they were 17-0.
The Bucs manage only 1 FG in the 2nd quarter to bring them to 3-17 to end the half.
In the 3rd quarter, both teams get FGs to bring score to 20-6. But then at the TB 4 yard line, a short pass to Gant and a horribly missed tackle by the Skins allowed a 96 yard TD. 20-13 Redskins.
In the 4th quarter, the Skins get another FG to bring them to 23-13 and then a Bucs FG 23-16. With just under 3minutes left in the game, Bucs pass to Allen for a 20 yard TD and succeed in a 2 point conversion take the lead at 24-23.
The Redskins have the ball back with 2 minutes remaining. QB Kellen Clemens throws for a 41 yard TD pass to Donte’ Stallworth. They attempt a 2 point conversion, but fail. 29-24 Redskins. There is still 1 minute left in the game with the Bucs getting possession. At 3rd and 20 the Redskins sack Crompton for a 14 yard loss. Game Over!
The season starts for the Redskins at home against the New York Giants on September 11th at 4:15. I have typically travelled down for the home openers but because the Redskins are playing in my town of Toronto, Ontario, that will be my true home game.
Here are the offensive #s.
About the Author
Written by Mercedes Green
I lived in Greene County Virginia for about 5 years of my childhood. This span of time was enough to imprint the love of the Washington Redskins (and hate of the Dallas Cowboys) into my life forever, even though I am Canadian and still live in Canada. I am in no way an expert on sports, football, or even the Redskins, but I do absolutely adore them, their fans and their home state(s). My favourite Redskin is and will always be Darrell Green (not because we share the same last name lol). I've adored Chris Cooley since he joined the team from the 2004 draft and love London Fletcher. Hail to the Redskins! See you October 30th in my home town of Toronto.
