Well, it was a long lockout over the summer and a short preseason. The Cowboys end the preseason with a 2-2 record after losing to Miami 17-3. The bigger story as always, will be who is going to make the 53 man roster.
The biggest name of who is going to make the team is a home town favorite, Phillip Tanner, who is an undrafted rookie and graduate of local Kimble High School. Tanner has turned the heads of many of the coaches with his openness to coaching and hard running, and he turned the heads of many of the fans with his helmet-less run against the Chargers. His feel good story leads many to question if Jerry Jones will keep 4 backs after announcing that Tanner would make the team during the game or if Tashard Choice, who is nursing a bruised knee, will be the odd man out.
Felix Jones is on the roster without question along with Tanner, and the Cowboys 3rd round pick DeMarco Murray made a strong case for the number 2 back getting the start and tallying up 96 yards rushing and receiving to go with a 21 yard kick return.
Another 2 wide receivers of note trying to make the team Raymond Radway and Manny Johnson played well, Radway unfortunately suffered a broken leg in the last seconds of the game after making a strong push for a roster spot.
The mess that is the Cowboy’s kicking game seems to be a very cumbersome situation that probably isn’t as difficult to discern as many might think. David Buehler has not been impressive, Dave Rayner should be out after missing 2 field goals last night, Shayne Graham is a highly accurate kicker (86% over his career) but lacks the power for consistent touch backs even with kickoffs being moved up 5 yards, and Dan Bailey (undrafted rookie out of Oklahoma State) has been the better player. There are grumblings that Jones may keep 2 kickers, but that is highly unlikely.
It was interesting to see Jerry Jones send a message to starting corners Terrance Newman and Mike Jenkins indirectly questioning their toughness calling it a “big concern” and that they’re saying all the right things, implying they might not be doing all the right things in his mind. It won’t likely effect their status as Dallas’ starting corners, but does leave some concern as to Jerry’s patience for 2 corners who have developed something of a soft reputation.
