PGA TOUR WHAT IT MEANS: September 5, 2011 — New York and Boston

Back after last week’s edition was disrupted by Hurricane Irene, so we’ll cover the two tournaments:
1) Great rain-shortened win by Dustin Johnson at Barclays. He’s become Mr. Bounce Back, winning a playoff event for the second straight year after having a mishap down the stretch of a major. Look, DJ is a star, we all know this, and the next step for him is clearly to win a major. But it’s nice to see him winning again after another major disappointment.
2) Webb Simpson is on a roll. After winning at Greensboro three weeks ago, he wins again today, one-putting seven of his last eight greens, and beating Chez Reavie in a playoff. I’ve said it many times: winning breeds winning, and Simpson is a prime example of that.
3) Here’s the story of Tiger Woods’ year: he might not qualify for his own tournament. If Tiger fails to be in the top 50 in the world by the end of the BMW Championship, which is in two weeks, he won’t qualify for his own Chevron World Challenge in December. His current standing? 44th. Ouch.
