The pre-season is finally done and the final cuts have been made. Veteran center Geoff Hangartner, Reggie Corner and Shawn Nelson were among those who were given their walking papers last Saturday. As the highest paid player on the offensive line, Hangartner was the biggest surprise from the cut list. He lost his starting job to the Bills 20th overall pick in the 2009 draft, Eric Wood. The Bills LB core is much improved with the additions of Shawne Merriman and Nick Barnett. Merriman stated, “I think I am (ready)”, I sure hope he is! The Bills were dead last in their run defense last year giving up 169 yards/game. Therefore, Merriman and the entire defense better be “ready” if they want to improve those stats. I guess there they can only move up!
Ryan Fitzpatrick has been given the green light to quarterback this team to their first playoff appearance since 1999. He’ll have his work cut out for him. Based on opponents 2010 records, the Buffalo Bills will have the second hardest schedule going into this season. If they do finally make the playoffs it will because of hard work, determination and some much needed luck. Stevie “Why So Serious?” Johnson will be the leader on a very young receiving unit. I still don’t understand letting go of Lee Evans for a fourth round pick to Baltimore, but Coach Gailey may know something we don’t know. I’m just glad I didn’t order that Evans jersey. It would have made it’s way into my jersey reject pile which includes; Rob Johnson, Nate Clements and Marshawn Lynch.
My predictions for this year may not be a favorable read for Bills fans, but I am trying to be unbiased. Although the Bills have improved on defense and have a strong armed quarterback with deep threat potential, they still lack that all around skill and coaching to get them past teams like the Baltimore Ravens, and the New York Jets to get to the playoffs. Realistically, they can beat Kansas City, Oakland, Cincinnati, Washington, Tennessee, Miami and Denver, however that still only brings them to 7 or 8 wins, which is a huge improvement from their 4-12 record of last year but still won’t be enough. I’ll never switch teams, I’ll never give up hope, but I’m really tired of the Bills being bottom feeders. If they can sneak a win against the Jets, Chargers or Patriots (14 straight losses) then they could have a shot at making the playoffs. The Bills schedule, team and skill may not scream out “SUPER BOWL CHAMPS!” but there might be a few whispers that say “playoff bound“. I pick the Bills to finish 7-9 on the year and missing the playoffs for a 12th year in a row… or is it 13?
Are the Packers good enough to repeat as Super Bowl Champs?? My wife would say “PFFFFFTTT” to that. Most analysts and prognosticators are picking them to win again, but I’ll go against the grain and pick the New Orleans Saints to win against the New England Patriots. The headlines will read ” New Orleans Saint Super Champs, Buffalo Bills still #1 in your heart!”
I hope this season brings excitement for Buffalo Bills fans around the world. It’s been a very long road and God knows we deserve a break… especially against Philly because we’ll be there. Have a good year and please feel free to leave your predictions in a comment below.
Cheers with beers and eat wings every home game…. I know I will.
Final Score this week. Bills 32-17 over the Chiefs!
