A plane carrying the entire Lokomotiv KHL team along with eight crew members crashed Wednesday and it’s being reported that just one passenger has survived. Among those killed were former NHLers Pavol Demitra, Josef Vasicek, Ruslan Salei, Karel Rachunek, long time NHL defenseman Brad McCrimmon who was the coach of the team, and recent Stars defenseman Karlis Skrastins.
The plane took off from an airport near the city of Yaroslavl and was headed to Minsk to play their first game of the season. It’s being reported that the plane was unable to gain enough speed during takeoff therefore could not elevate properly and collided with a radar that was positioned at the end of the runway. It crashed just seconds after.
The lone survivor that’s being reported is 26 year old Alexander Galimov, though Doctors are saying it is unlikely he will survive his injuries.
Skrastins played the past two seasons in Dallas and also had stops in Florida and Colorado after beginning his NHL career in Nashville in the 1998-99 season. He was 37.
