UFC 137: Nick Diaz Removed From Main Event

Nick Diaz has always been a little bit of a loose cannon. He loathes media appearances, he says things that are often incoherent and there was that one time he started a brawl in Strikeforce. When the UFC signed Nick Diaz they know the inherent risks that came with signing him. That one day he may just go off the deep end. Today was that day.
If Major League Baseball has “Manny being Manny” Mixed Martial Arts now has “Diaz being Diaz.”
After no showing press conferences in Toronto and Las Vegas, Dana White removed Nick Diaz from the main event of UFC 137. In one of the more surreal press conferences in UFC history White announced the Carlos Condit (27-5 record) would be replacing Diaz in the main event. According to White, Diaz went MIA (and as of this posting no one still knows where Nick Diaz is) and wouldn’t return phone calls from White or Diaz’s trainer Cesar Gracie. Gracie, who has consistently defended Diaz, even seemed to reach a breaking point. “A lot of people invested quite a deal in this fight,” Gracie told ESPN.com in an interview. “The fact that Nick is now playing games and can’t be a man and handle his responsibilities is not good.”
Of course George St. Pierre isn’t the only man whose fight was changed on short notice. The scheduled co-main event of UFC 137 was Carlos Condit vs. BJ Penn. With Condit moving up to the main event, Penn is suddenly left without an opponent. There are several welterweights that could step in to fight BJ Penn but none make more sense than a rematch against Jon Fitch.
It’s debatable whether or not Condit is a tougher opponent for Diaz as they both bring different, but unique skill sets to a fight. Diaz is better off his back and Condit can threaten more on his feet. Regardless both are legitimate opponents for GSP that deserve title shots. It’s lucky, and maybe a bit coincidental, that White scheduled such a strong welterweight cofeature for the same card as the unreliable Diaz.
