The Mariners were game. The Angels just had more game

It’s really hard to not get excited about the Angels. Every time I think they are done they find a way to get back in the AL West race. The unfortunate thing, time is running out. .

The Angels looked decent on Monday, slapping around 7 hits on their way to a 7-3 victory. The Mariners did the Angels a bunch of favors by committing 5 errors. The errors didn’t amount to much, as the Angels still scored 6 earned runs off Mariners starter Anthony Vasquez.

I’m sure Dan Haren was happy he didn’t have to pitch opposite Felix Hernandez again. Twice this year he’s had to do just that. He won one of the two games, but the only one he lost was a 2-1 affair last week.

Hernandez got the start on Tuesday, and the Angels did him some favors by committing 4 errors. Seattle scored no earned runs, but either did the Angels in their 2-1 loss. Should a game count if all the runs are unearned? I hated thinking it, but I felt the game was over after the M’s took a 1-0 lead.

Through two games, you’d never know which was the team 23 games under .500. The Mariners outhit the Angels 21-11. They did out error the Angels though 6 to 4.

I’ve attacked the Angels pen, for good reason I believe, all season. However, the Angels pen pitched 8 scoreless innings in games one and two. Nice job!

Nice to see Garrett Richards back. He didn’t look bad at all. Thankfully, Fernando Rodney was glued to his seat in the pen.

I know his starts have come against the Baltimore Orioles and Seattle Mariners, but Jerome Williams looks like the real deal. On Wednesday he held the Mariners hitless through 5 innings. Yes, he did give up a home run to Trayvon Robinson in the 6th, but that was the only hit and run he allowed in 8 innings. Just as impressive, were the 12 ground ball out he recorded.

Funny, Angels Live just pointed out the Mariners line. 1 run, 1 hit, 1 error & 1 runner left on. 1-1-1-1.

Things didn’t look too good for the Halos until the 8th. That’s when the never-say-die Angels mounted a rally. Maicer Izturis with the key 2 run double, followed by a Peter Bourjos RBI single helped the Halos win, 3-1. My only concern is Peter Bourjos hand, or finger. He dove back to first after his 8th inning single, and appeared to be in pain all the way around the bases. Hope it’s nothing serious.

What’s with Ichiro? There was no way he tipped the pitch in the 9th inning, that turned in to a strike out. He should have run to first no matter. Standing and arguing allowed Jeff Mathis the time to find the ball, and throw to first to complete the strikeout. Ichiro is better than that.

Jordan Walden was pitching in the 9th, and it was the best he’s looked in a long time. Throwing mainly fastballs, Walden polished off the Mariners with ease for his 29th save of the year. When is the last time Walden threw only 7 pitches to get out of the inning? I’d say never.

The Angels are playing some exciting ball, so where are all of the fans? There is no way in hell that more than 100,000 people took in the 3 games. Angels Stadium looked, and sounded empty. I do understand. The economy is bad in California, and tickets aren’t cheap. If nothing else, keep yelling from home.

Thankfully, the Mariners are leaving. Well, not the Mariners, but Brendan Ryan, who made some fantastic plays throughout the 3 games.

Now it gets tough for the Halos. 3 games against the Yankees starting Friday. Jered Weaver, Joel Pineiro and Dan Haren pitch for the Angels. Bartolo Colon, C.C. Sabathia and Freddy Garcia pitch for the bombers.

More bad news.. The Rangers get 3 at home against the Oakland A’s. Texas has beaten Oakland 8 straight times, and they play great at home, where they are 16 games above .500. The A’s are 20 games under .500 on the road. Could be a huge turning point in the Angels quest for a postseason berth.

The Angels trail by 2.5 games with 19 left to play.

Exciting stuff!

Go Angels!!
