Atlanta Falcons Week 1 Preview

Are you ready for some FOOTBALL? After a crazy offseason in which there was no NFL news besides the now infamous word “lockout”, the regular season finally begins. And our Falcons are in perfect position to make this a season to remember.
Gameplan for the Falcons:
1) After an 0-4 preseason, the Falcons have to prove to the fans that the season won’t be a fluke. The Falcons are in their “window of opportunity” for a Super Bowl appearance. It’s about time to get there.
2) Ray Edwards looks ready. He had knee surgery in the offseason and missed some of the preseason but he showed his skills in the the final two preseason games. People (mostly critics) said that Edwards was only good because of the fantastic players playing beside him on the Vikings. Well I can’t tell you if that’s true or not, but he definitely has some great players playing beside him now. We can’t forget John Abraham on the other side of the line at defensive end. The veteran recorded 13 sacks last year without having a significant number two DE on the other side to take pressure off of him. But now Abraham has what he needs to draw a large number of single blocks, and if he is double-teamed, Edwards will be able to wreak havoc on the quarterback.
3) Julio Jones looks like a veteran out there. Even though he dropped a pass in the endzone some days ago (hey even Jerry Rice dropped passes sometimes), his speed and route running looks top notch. Roddy White, Tony Gonzalez, and Harry Douglass (who has looked SHARP) will all have single coverage. Put that with a speedy backup RB in Jacquizz Rodgers catching passes out of the backfield and defenses will definitely have a problem with the Falcons offense.
4)Backup DB’s Dominique Franks and Christopher Owens battled for the nickelback spot but neither was able to claim the spot. General Manger Thomas Dimitroff came and delivered after Pittsburgh shredded our secondary in the preseason. We signed former Colts starting CB Kelvin Hayden and former Patriots starting safety James Sanders. Two great players for cheap and all of a sudden our secondary looks elite with Dunta Robinson and Brent Grimes holding down the corners and William Moore and Thomas Decoud holding down the safety position.
The Chicago Bears, our week 1 opponent, is still searching for their missing piece while the Falcons have addressed all their missing pieces. Jay Cutler can’t stay off the ground (sacked 52 times last year) and new WR Roy Williams isn’t the answer for them, at least right now. Their defense is still solid but their players are getting older (Urlacher and Peppers). The Falcons offense and defense might be too much for them to handle in week 1. The Falcons’ improved secondary may need a little time to gel but they should be fine.
Score prediction: Falcons 31, Bears 17
