Jesus Montero Turns Heads

Posted By Stephanie Geosits On Sep 10 2011 @ 2:23 pm In New York Yankees | 4 Comments

Considering he is a 21-year-old Yankees’ September callup, Jesus Montero is attracting a lot of attention. In just six games, he has 3 HR to his credit and sports an absolutely ridiculous slugging percentage of .800. He’s averaging one run and  RBI per game. He’s walked twice, but has also struck out four times in 20 ABs.

Montero is the fifth-ranked prospect in all of baseball (and the top catcher) and is living up to his billing at the plate, but has not had any opportunity to prove himself behind it. That will not change for the rest of this year, but I don’t think it bothers Montero or the Yankees. The idea all along has been to bring him up and get him some at-bats as the DH.

At Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Montero hit .288 with 19 doubles and 18 HR in 109 AAA games. His strikeout total (98) was high, so he’ll probably have to learn to be more patient at the plate, but thus far in New York, he has made a name for himself.

Given Joe Girardi’s style, I would doubt he would name Montero to the post-season roster, but it’s definitely a good experience to introduce him to the club now. Martin and Cervelli are currently the go-to guys behind the plate, but with a strong finish to 2011 and a good showing in the spring, Montero might crack the roster next season. He’s certainly making things exciting for now.
