The Buffalo Bills did not have to wait long to get their first win of the season as they beat the Kansas City Chiefs 41-7. Last year they were winless until they beat the Detroit Lions 14-12 in week 10! Hopefully this win will be an indicator of what will come from the Bills this year. What more can Bills fans ask for? Offense, defense and special teams were on their game today. The Bills may have only scored 54 points in the pre-season, but like I said does the pre-season really matter?
Ryan Fitzpatrick lived up to my expectations, finishing the day tying a career high with 4 touchdowns. His first touchdown came 2 minutes into the first quarter capitalizing from a Kansas City fumble off the opening kickoff. From that moment you felt like it was going to be a good day for Bills fans. Stevie Johnson caught an amazing 27 yard touchdown pass as the first quarter was winding down to put Buffalo up by 14. Kansas City appeared to have scored a touchdown but upon review it showed that Leonard Pope didn’t have control of the ball and the call on the field was reversed. The next 2 plays were a sack and missed field goal leaving Chief fans calling out the boo birds. It was smooth sailing for the Bills after that.
Fred Jackson proved his case today that he deserves that starting job by posting 112 yards rushing on 20 carries. Buffalo’s offense were a cohesive group today and the only complaint I have is that I wanted them to get to 50 points. I would have loved to see Fitzpatrick finish the game but I guess you deserve a rest when you can put up 41 points in 3 quarters. Plus, with the Bills past injury woes, can you blame them for sitting their starters?
The big surprise of the game was the excellent play of Bills tight end Scott Chandler. Firstly, it was shocking to see the Bills use their tight end and secondly, how successful it was. Chandler ended the game with 5 receptions for 63 yards and 2 touchdowns. My request for this season is for the Bills to use their 6″5′ tight end to set up more workable third downs. Hopefully Coach Gailey will read my blog and take my advice!
Remember that terrible run defense last year? I do, but the Bills defense made a us forget for at least one week. I believe tackling was the key to Buffalo’s success this week. Play after play, they were on the Chiefs like “white on rice”. I would have loved to see more Shawne Merriman, but when all players are in sync how can anyone stand out on defense.
I know, I know, it’s only week one and it was against the Chiefs but today was something they can take into next week and show the league that it may be time to consider the Bills as a playoff team. Everything is good when the Bills win, don’t ‘cha think? Let’s take the week to enjoy the big opening day win, talk about it at the water cooler, decide where you want to watch the game on Sunday and cheer on your Bills like it was 1990.
Key notes from the game:
- Bills defense had 2 sacks, 1 interception and 1 forced fumble
- Fitzpatrick’s beard is starting to grow in nicely
- The beer was cold and wings were hot
- My wife didn’t have to worry for the whole game!
- Finished my bar.
