For the love of Pete, the Angels can’t complete the sweep against the Yankees

No complaining here. Any time a team can take 2 of 3 from the team with the 2nd best record in baseball, all’s good in this corner.

The Angels had a great chance to win Sunday’s game, but it just wasn’t to be. Well, there were a couple of things that went wrong.

With all the great catches he makes, it’s easy to forget that Peter Bourjos is human. His error in the 7th turned a tie game, in to a 1-run deficit. I don’t think it was the error, as much as the was the wild throw past the cutoff man he made after picking up the ball. Not all’s bad, Bourjos did hit a 2-run home run earlier in the game to give the Angels a 5-2 lead.

I did have a problem with Mike Scioscia’s decision to let Ervin Santana start the 7th inning. Santana did not have anywhere close to his best stuff, and gave up 2 hits to begin the inning to Brett Gardner and Derek Jeter. Me, personally, I would have had Scott Downs start the inning. No, this isn’t a criticism, just a difference of opinion. It all might have been a moot point, if Bourjos doesn’t drop Mark Teixeira fly ball.

The Angels actually had chances all afternoon. two on, and 1 out in the 3rd, they scored one run on wild pitch, and that was it. Bases loaded, one out in the 5th, the Halos scored no runs. Finally, 7th inning, 2 on 1 out, Angels got zilch, again. Torii Hunter was the big culprit on Sunday, stranding 4 runners by himself. Angels lose 6-5, but take 2 of three from New York.

7 days ago, the Angels trailed the Rangers by 3.5 games. They are now 2.5 games out after finishing their 9 game home stand with a 6-3 record.

The Angels now head to Oakland to face the always tough A’s team. Well, they always seem to bring out their best against the Angels. It was nice to see the A’s save their big starters for the Angels. Gio Gomzalez, Brandon McCarthy and Rich Harden will throw for Oakland. Joel Pineiro, Jerome Williams, and Jered Weaver get the ball for the Angels. This will be anything but an easy trip for the Halos.

One, maybe two, more notes: The Angels have lost 4 series since the All-Star break. One of them was to the very same Oakland A’s team. The Angels have won only 3 of their past 7 games against Oakland.

Go Angels!!
