Vikings Let One Get Away

The Minnesota Vikings are 0-1. They traveled to San Diego on Sunday and lost to the Chargers 24-17. The result itself is not really that surprising, but how the game unfolded certainly was. The Vikings had a 17-7 lead at halftime, however, the team was unable to do anything offensively in the second half.
Actually, the only player on offense that had a good day was Adrian Peterson and that shouldn’t surprise anyone. AD had 98 yards rushing on only 16 carries. The real head scratcher was McNabb. He threw for only 39 yards. 39 YARDS!!!! While some credit has to go to the San Diego defense, Donovan has to be held accountable. Minnesota could have Christian Ponder, Joe Webb, Tarvaris Jackson or anyone else put up numbers like that.
The only reason that the Vikings had a 10-point lead in this game was because Percy Harvin had an electrifying 103 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. That is what makes this game so frustrating. If Minnesota had any type of passing game, they would have stolen a victory.
Defensively, the Vikings had some guys step up. Jared Allen played a great game, but he was the only guy that got any pressure on Philip Rivers. Not having Kevin Williams due to a suspension certainly didn’t help matters. The Minnesota D did a nice job against the run, but with the aforementioned lack of pressure, Rivers picked apart the secondary. He completed passes to eight different receivers and hit TE Antonio Gates eight times.
The Vikings now get to come home for a couple of games and will take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this Sunday. This will not be an easy game, but this year, none of the games are going to be easy. Minnesota has to figure out a way to have some success through the air to take the burden off Peterson a little bit. It’s only week 1, but the Vikings already have plenty of items to work on
