So I took a season away from the game that I love…for many reasons…mostly because I couldn’t take another season of extreme loosing. I returned to my love (FOOTBALL) just in time to witness the CAMolina (that’s my new name for the team) Panthers return to glory…kinda.
After a mind numbing league lock-out, abbreviated off-season and controversial number one number two preseason, The Panthers number one draft pick Cam Newton did NOT disappoint in his NFL debut. Breaking rookie records and bringing an excitement to the Panthers franchise that has been M.I.A. since the 2008 season. I have to admit I was jumping up and down and doing side herkies like my LIFE depended on it!
It was refreshing to see number 89 running routes and reminded Panther fans why WE LOVE STEVE!!! Smith and Newton looked AMAZING hooking up for 2 long distant touchdowns in the first half. Smitty had an energy about him that hasn’t been seen for Years!
Carolina’s defense looked good… in the Red-Zone…I personal wish they got it together a little earlier to hold Arizona on their side of the field. Opponent punting good, opponent scoring not so much. Newton did get his first NFL rushing touchdown as well as his first penalty for his pigskin guitar End-Zone celebration. Speaking of penalties, the Panthers had several expensive penalties that cost major yards. The defense did a phenomenally job holding Larry Fitzgerald to minimum yards.Until somewhere in the 3rd quarter they forgot that Fitzgerald CAN , WILL and DID catch the deep ball. 3rd quarter worries me…there is work be done/ attention to be to paid to this portion of the game…on both sides of the ball! The defense looked tired (lazy) and the offense appeared too comfortable.
Neither team had field goals until the 4th quarter. Both teams managed to only put up touchdowns for the first three quarters of the game. Arizona’s Special Teams changed the momentum with Patrick Peterson’s punt return. The CAMolina Panthers HAD to score a touchdown. Arizona’s Defense put tons of pressure on Newton and he maintained his pose like an ole Pro. FIVE attempts at a touchdown Panther?!? Really?!? Arizona’s D proved to be too much.
Welp! The game conclude with team Panthers coming home with an L, but an excitement and positive outlook on the season and the rookie Newton. Sunday’s home opener will surely be one for the books. Until then…TEAM PANTHERS FOREVER!!!!
