6+ hours of baseball & 14 pitchers later, the Angels finally spilt the first 2 in Oakland

I’ve been dreading this road trip for quite a while. Well, not Baltimore so much, but Oakland and Toronto. Oakland is, and always will be, a pain in the ass to the Angels. There is about 30 people in the stadium, the team is going no where, but they play the Angels like it’s the 7th game of the World Series.

I knew for the Angels to remain close to the Rangers, they would need at least one of their back end starters to pitch well. One pitched horribly, while the other pitched less than mediocre.

We all now the horrible one. It’s our guy Joel Piniero. Pineiro, who gave up 4 walks, and 7 earned runs his last start here, did it again on Monday. Well…not completely. The last time he walked 4 of the first 5 batters he faced. Monday he walked 2 of the first 3 batters. The 4th hitter, Josh Willingham, hit a dart over the left field wall. Angels down 3-0 before the 30 people could blow their vuvuzelas. Pineiro lasted 3 innings, giving up 5 earned runs.

I can’t wait for the Pineiro experiment to end.

The Halos had some chances, but Mark Trumbo couldn’t bring any home, or move any runners over. After his first at bat, I yelled, “He needs a day off!!!”. He got one on Tuesday, one day too late. 2nd inning, after Torii Hunter singled, Trumbo struck out. Vernon Wells would triple Hunter in, so Trumbo’s strike out didn’t matter, but still. Mike Trout and Erick Aybar made the final 2 outs of the inning. Angels still got one run.

4th inning, 2 on, no out, Trumbo struck out again, but Wells and Trout made out as well. You could just see in his body language that he was spent.

I was pissed, so I shut off the TV. Sometimes I do that with the hope that the when I check the score later, the Halos will have somehow found a way to win. Didn’t happen.

Why can’t the Angels hit Gio Gonzalez? I interviewed Gio when he was 17 years old, and have gotten along with him ever since, but that doesn’t excuse him from owning the Angels. In his last 20 innings, Gonzalez has allowed the Angels just 2 earned runs–both of those coming Monday night.

Angels lose 6-3, and fall to 3 games back of the Rangers.

Jerome Williams will save the day in game 2, right? Through 2 innings, Williams looked like the real deal. 3rd inning, different story. Let me rewind first. Angels got 3 in the top of the 3rd, highlighted by Frank Howard….I mean Howard Kendricks 17th home run of the year, a 2-run shot.

Now back to Williams. He allowed 2 hits, 3 walks (the final one with the bases loaded), and watched Maicer Izturis commit an error. Feeling my heart about to explode, Williams got out of the inning with double play.

He got another double pay in the 4th, but then came the 5th. Another 2 walks, a key double that tied the game, and Williams night, thankfully, was over.

The Angels finally took the lead in the 7th, thank’s to Izturis ground out. That was Izturis 4th straight game winning RBI. Before that RBI, the Angels were 0 for their last 17, with runners in scoring position.

Kendrick made sure they wouldn’t lose, hitting a huge 2-run home run in the 9th, his 2nd of the game and 18th of the year, giving the Angels a 6-3 lead. Kendrick had 4 of the Angels 6 RBI.

I really hate vuvuzelas.

I wanna give credit to the Angels bullpen, but Jordan Walden hasn’t pitched yet. Walden looked great tonight, picking up save number 30. The entire Angels bullpen has looked awesome in this series, throwing 9.2 innings so far in the 2 games, only allowing 1 run. That is some great throwing. That includes Fernando Rodney, who did allow 2 walks in less than an inning on Monday. I’ll reiterate….HE SUCKS!

Angels face another nemesis tomorrow when Rich Harden takes the mound for the A’s. The Angels counter with Jered Weaver, who will be looking for his 17th win of the year.

Angels still trail the Rangers by 3 games, but they only have 14 games left.

Go Angels!!
