I recently took advantage of a self imposed vacation in Cancun, MX that was designed to offer some rest and relaxation. With my mission accomplished I returned to find that I was not the only one to receive a boost of energy of late. Apparently the Cardinals have re-energized themselves and made up some considerable ground in the standings. At the time of my departure for Cancun the Redbirds were sitting at 70-64 and 10 ½ games back of the Brewers in the NL Central.
With a 3 game set looming at Miller Park the Brewers were poised to extend their double digit lead and put the Cardinals in an even deeper hole. The Cards swept the Brewers to begin their current surge in which they have won 12 of their past 16 games. The Brew Crew have gone 8-8 during the same span seeing their lead in the NL Central dwindle to 5.5 games.
Even with their recent surge the Cardinals chances of catching the Brewers are fading fast. In order for the Cards to overtake the Brewers they would have to go 11-2 in their final 13 games while the Brewers would have to go 4-8 in their final 12 games. That would give the Cards a one game lead and the NL Central crown. Is that possible? Absolutely! Is it likely? …
When reviewing the Cardinals record against their remaining opponents there is reason for hope. The Redbirds have a combined record of 22-12 against the Phillies, Mets, Cubs and Astros. However, the Brewers have an even more impressive record against their remaining opponents. The Brew Crew have a combined record of 28-14 against the Reds, Marlins, Pirates and Cubs. So, while I like the Cardinals’ chances of going 11-2 to finish the regular season, I must admit I am not as confident that the Brewers will go 4-8 to finish their season. Don’t count the Cards out just yet. Do you believe in miracles?
