Brady To Much For The San Diego Defense

Tom Brady threw for three touchdowns as he led the New England Patriots to a 35-21 win over the San Diego Chargers to improve their record to 2-0.  San Diego had a chance to make a statement that this is the Chargers year, but 4 turnovers and the inability for the San Diego defense to stop Tom Brady was their downfall.

San Diego was hoping to get off to a quick start on the road against New England to take the crowd out of the game, but it was the Patriots who scored first.   Tom Brady hooked up with tight end Aaron Hernandez to give New England a 7-0 lead.  This was their first offensive possession as they went 92 yards on 12 plays.  This was not the start the San Diego defense was hoping for if they plan on keeping the New England offense under control.   San Diego answered right back thanks to two big catches by Malcolm Floyd as he was able to out leap New England defenders to keep the drive alive.  Ryan Mathews finished off the 7 play, 80 yard drive when he scored on a 10 yard draw play to tie the score at 7.

On the Patriots next offensive opportunity they once again drove right down the field before having to settle for a Stephen Gostkowski 22 yard field goal and New England regained the lead 10-7 early in the second quarter.  The San Diego defense is spending too much time on the field which will catch up to them in the fourth quarter if things don’t change.  The Chargers marched down the field all the way to the one yard line before failing to punch it in on a fourth-and-goal at the 1 which turned out to be a game changer.  They should have faked it to Tolbert and passed it to a wide open Charger receiver, say Antonio Gates who is MIA.   New England had another 99 yard scoring drive for the second consecutive game.   The Patriots put together an impressive 10 play, 99 yard scoring drive finished off by a 10-yard touchdown pass to Rob Gostkowski to give New England a 17-7 advantage and suddenly the Patriots had a 10-point lead.  Brady is carving up the San Diego defense as they seem helpless trying to figure out how to stop the Patriots offense.  New England finished the first half scoring by kicking a field goal on the last play of the second quarter giving the Patriots a 20-7 lead. The field goal was set up thanks to an interception by an unlikely source, defensive tackle Vince Wilfork got his first career interception and rumbled and stumbled for a 28 yard return.

There was no more scoring until the fourth quarter when San Diego was able to score a touchdown.  They went on a 10 play, 64 yard scoring drive capped off by a 3-yard pass from Rivers to Vincent Jackson to make the score 20-14.  San Diego had a chance to take the lead when they stopped New England on a fourth down gamble, but gave it right back when Mike Tolbert fumbled.   It was the Chargers third turnover of the game.  New England wasted no time in making San Diego pay, Tom Brady once again found Rob Gostkowski for a 17 yard touchdown and they went and were successful on a two-point conversion and led 28-14.  San Diego refused to go away as Vincent Jackson made a spectacular one-handed catch in the end zone to once again keep the Chargers hopes alive trailing by a touchdown.  New England finally put the game out of reach as a tired San Diego defense could not stop the Patriots and they allowed Benjarvus Green-Ellis to scamper 16 yards to make the final score 35-21.  The Chargers next opponent is the Kansas City Chiefs who have lost their first two games.
