Falcons ‘Rise Up’ and Beat Vick and the Eagles; 35-31

Samuel L. Jackson opened up the game, staring into an overhead camera and yelling something proudly.

Falcons fans might have heard him yell out the slogan for our team, “Rise Up!”.

From that point on, for the next sixty minutes of football, the Falcons rose up to the challenge of taking down the Eagles.

The atmosphere at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta was electric. As we all know, the Falcons were playing against the former face of their franchise, a good quarterback by the name of Michael Vick. This was the first time that Vick would come and start a game in the Georgia Dome since 2006, and that was when he was a Falcon. Vick supporters have always argued that the Falcons would be a better team now with Vick than with Matt Ryan. It was Matty-Ice’s time to show the Vick supporters that he could beat the guy he replaced as the franchise face.

For most of the game, Vick dominated the Falcons defense. He finished with 242 passing yards and 25 rushing yards. However, the key here was that Vick did not finish the game. He got knocked into his own lineman in the 3rd quarter and suffered a concussion. That completely changed the offensive mindset for the Eagles and the defensive mindset for the Falcons. Not the defensive mindset for the Eagles, which was the reason the Falcons won.

I’ve played football most of my life. And I can tell you this: you should never blame a loss on one person. There are 21 other players that decide the outcome of a football game. And when it comes to the Eagles, Vick was not their whole team. While you could make a case that he is the focal point of the offense, Vick has no influence on their defense. And the Eagles defense let our Falcons back into the game to regain the lead and secure the victory.

Key Points:

  • Vick had two fumbles and an interception to hand the ball back to the Falcons several times
  • Matt Ryan threw a career-high four touchdown passes, two of which went to Tony Gonzalez
  • Michael Turner rushed for 114 yards on 21 carries and one touchdown
  • The Eagles’ Jeremy Maclin had a monster game on the receiving side, but he dropped a key pass which helped secure the Falcons victory
  • The Falcons’ new nickelback, Kelvin Hayden, recorded an interception in his first game as a Falcon
  • James Sanders started an safety for the Falcons, replacing Thomas Decoud
  • Julio Jones made a monster catch in the 4th quarter to continue the drive and lead to a Falcons touchdown
  • The Falcons recorded five offensive touchdowns, after getting zero last week against the Bears
The Falcons are definitely Super Bowl contenders, and not just because of this win. If the offense continues to convert touchdowns and not field goals, then we should be okay. However, The Falcons defense must be able to stop explosive offenses, because giving up 31 points is never a good sign.
