Well, this isn’t quite how I saw this game going…

A day later and I’m still shaking my head. Sunday night’s battle between the Eagles and the Falcons was easily the most hyped game of the weekend and it didn’t disappoint.  The first time he touched the ball Sunday, MV7 made a few  flashy moves and picked up a couple yards to ignite a roaring crowd.

Then he proceeded to fumble the ball twice and throw an interception. Oh yeah, and run into his teammate, start spitting up blood and exit the Georgia Dome pointing up to the scoreboard as the Falcons fans booed him off the field.

No matter how you slice it, this was one of oddest games I’ve watched in a long time. There was relatively no flow whatsoever and the only consistency that existed was the no mercy physicality. Sure the match up pinned the Eagles against the Falcons but THIS was a dog fight (too soon?).

We learned a few things…

  • Although Matt Ryan looked rattled from the start of the game, with about 12:00 left in the fourth quarter he shook his nerves and proceeded to open a can of whoop you-know-what on the Eagles in the form of an 80-yd drive. He finished with a 91.5 passer rating and improved his career record in the GA Dome to 21-1. The Boy Is Back.
  • The Eagles D is scary good…but, so is Michael Turner. With 21 carries and 114 yards, Turner had his way with Philly and exposed some holes in their defense against the run. I guess they learned from last week to give him more than ten carries.
  • Tony Gonzalez is in his 15th season at age 35 and he’s still got the magic touch. He had seven receptions for 83 yards and the Falcons’ organization has to be licking their chops knowing in addition to their explosive run game they have Tony, Roddy and Julio as tantalizing targets for Matt Ryan.
  • Vick throws picks, gets knicks, and the Falcons exposed what Philly needs to fix. We hear it all the time.. the team that makes the fewest mistakes will win the game. Well, uh, Vick fumbled twice and threw an INT. He also ran into his teammate and had to leave the field with a concussion from the fluke collision. At this point, Philly was up by 10…and then allowed Matt Ryan to engineer a fourth quarter comeback.  When MV7 made an early exit, the Eagles didn’t only lose a QB, they lost their mojo. Kafka (third string..behind Vick and Prince Vince) wasn’t playing too bad at all considering the circumstances but Philadelphia went from the “Dream Team” to the “Out-of-Steam Team” when it mattered most.
All in all, this was a wild ride but at the end of the day the Falcons seem to be right where they need to be going into Week 3 and it is entirely possible that dropping their first game of the year may have been just what the doctor ordered.
