The Chiefs’ Nightmare Continues

The Kansas City Chiefs are dropping like flies. You could not have written a worse script to how their season has begun. Last week they were crushed 41-7 and lost Eric Berry for the season. This week they were embarrassed 48-3 and lost Jamaal Charles for the season. In two weeks they have lost their best defensive and offensive players. If there were a button that could reset the entire season it would be jammed from the Chiefs pressing it so hard.
This is bad, this is getting messy, and it looks like the team does not know how to fix their problem. Matthew Stafford had his way with the Chiefs’ defense. He picked them apart for four touchdowns and 294 yards and had the Lions’ offense moving the ball without trouble the entire game. The Chiefs could not bring him down and finished the game with zero sacks. When your secondary is already bumped up the defensive line needs to help them out and get pressure on the quarterback. The one slightly bright spot for the defense was when Jon McGraw intercepted a pass, but moments later he fumbled it during his return.
I don’t need to explain how devastating a blow the loss of Charles is for this team. The run-first offense had already been struggling with him in the lineup and now they’re going to have an even tougher time moving the ball. They have guys to step in, but they’re no Jamaal Charles. Thomas Jones is proven, but he’s getting older and doesn’t have the explosiveness he once possessed, and Dexter McCluster is a quick little guy who is capable of making a big play whenever he has his hands on the ball. Those two guys combined for 91 yards on the ground and the entire offense struggled badly. Matt Cassell was never able to get in a rhythm. The QB threw three interceptions, lost a fumble, and threw for 133 yards, which was actually 14 more than he had last week. Their 10 total combined points on the season is less than what the Lions scored in the each of the second and fourth quarters yesterday.
To go along with all of their six turnovers, Kansas City also committed eight penalties for 70 yards. One of the most important characteristics in the NFL is discipline and the Chiefs are not showing any. They need to change something right this second or this season will continue to spiral out of control and only get worse.
