For the coach of a 1-1 team, which came very close to starting out 0-2, Joe Paterno is unconcerned. The Nittany Lions’ problems are multi-faceted, but just to recap:
2 Quarterbacks – Paternos Joe and Jay have yet to declare either Matt McGloin or Rob Bolden THE QB. Instead, they alternate between the two, seemingly with no rhyme or reason, not allowing either one to get in a rhythm nor letting their team rally around a leader on offense. Even with Eastern Michigan, the final non-conference opponent on the schedule, as an opportunity to name a starter, they refuse.
Lackluster performance – Losing to Alabama, a very good team, wasn’t the problem. Making mistakes (turnovers) against them was. Similarly, Temple put one of the best teams it has fielded in recent memory up against a disorganized Nittany Lions squad this past Saturday, and the Owls almost came out with a win. If anything, this should have been a wakeup call, but from JoePa’s Tuesday press conference, it certainly didn’t seem it.
Unfortunately for PSU fans, this looks like it’s going to be a really long season. They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but I think the Nittany Lion faithful would be happy if he would actually perform the ones he knows. Things will not get easier once the Big 10 season starts, so JoePa might want to give some thought to picking a QB and getting his team focussed, two tasks he’s been able to accomplish in prior seasons, but just can’t seem to do this year.
