The Mariano Rivera Appreciation Post

Posted By Brendan Sennott On Sep 21 2011 @ 10:58 pm In MLB,New York Yankees | 2 Comments

I have been swallowed up by the grind that is day-to-day life recently and have not had a chance to post.  The Yankees continue to lead the AL East and have clinched a playoff spot.  The ballclub as a whole is dog tired with long road trips and makeup games.  The offense should be great but is inconsistent.  The starting rotation is currently putrid, as even the great C.C. Sabathia has struggled with Joe Girardi’s ridiculous 6 man rotation.

If you ask me the 2011 Yankees will be quickly bounced by the far more clutch Texas Rangers or Detroit Tigers in the American League Division Series.  One comforting factor in all this uncertainty with the 2011 Yankees is one constant, Mariano Rivera.

Monday against the Twins, Rivera recorded his All-time record 602nd save.(now 603)   He has 42 of those saves in the post season.  Those numbers are unnecessary in documenting Rivera’s true greatness.  In this day of tarnished athletes like Tiger Woods (and his sexual exploits), LeBron James (and his ego) or  Roger Clemens (and possible perjury) it is nice to see a true living legend like Rivera, whose eloquence and humility actually outweigh what he does on the field.

Rivera is the best reliever of all time, and a sure fire first ballot hall-of-famer.  He is so much more than that.  I have had the pleasure of interviewing the man in the Yankee Clubhouse and he did not disappoint.  He is exactly what you see on television.  He is always smiling and is very accommodating, even to a part-time nobodies like me.  He is just too cool.  Many times when one meets their hero in person the result is often uninspiring.  Mo delighted.  I know it’s much more chic to talk NFL 24-7 here in early September, but not even Tom Brady or Peyton Manning can compare to Mariano’s greatness.

I just hope that in 30 years we realize that in Mariano Rivera we were watching an athlete who was along the same plane as Jordan,Koufax,Montana, or Gretzky. I hope we tell our kids about how awesome he was and what a pleasure he was to watch on every level.
