Chiefs Are On The Hot Seat – Week 3 Preview

The Kansas City Chiefs as a whole are on the hot seat.  There has been a lot of talk this week about Coach Todd Haley being on the hot seat and how he and General Manager Scott Pioli are not on great terms.  While this may be true, and of course a lot of people are not happy with the job Haley has done this season, he is not the only one at fault.  The entire Chiefs squad, injuries aside, has taken a huge step back from last year and is not playing NFL caliber football.  The passing game is almost non-existent, the running game just got a lot worse, and the defense has given up 89 points in two games.

Haley’s been taking a lot of heat, but why not put some of the blame on Matt Cassel, who has already thrown four interceptions this season, or Dwayne Bowe, who had a career year last season but only 118 yards in the first two games.  The entire team is just not clicking.  What seemed like such good chemistry last season is slowly looking like a mirage.  They still have a long way to go and their schedule is not doing them any favors as they head out west to play their division foe the San Diego Chargers.

Although the Chargers are coming of a Week 2 loss they are not off to their typical slow start.  In fact, they’re playing great.  Philip Rivers is being his usual self throwing for a ton of yards, but also an interception here and there.  The running game started to pick it up against the Patriots, although the status of Mike Tolbert is questionable right now and I’m still not fully sold on Ryan Mathews.  They’re also are bruised at the receiver position.  Malcolm Floyd left last week’s game in the second quarter and could potentially sit out this week and who knows how effective Antonio Gates will be with his foot injury still bothering him.  The Chiefs’ secondary definitely needs to keep a close watch on Vincent Jackson, who went off last week catching 10 balls for 172 yards and two touchdowns.  The guy is a playmaker.

The Chargers’ defense is solid.  They gave up 187 yards in Week 1 but then 504 last week, although that was against Tom Brady.  Something that the Chiefs have going for them is that the Chargers have only forced one turnover this season, so maybe they can start holding on to the ball instead of giving away free points.

Cassel needs to emerge as the team leader Kansas City thought they were getting when they traded for him and that starts this week.  What’s done is done.  I know it’s going to be tough to win this week, but they have a couple easier games coming up against Minnesota and Indianapolis (when was the last time someone said Indianapolis was an easy game?) so if they can just get something going and find a rhythm they’ll be on the right track.
