Giants Notebook: Week 3 Preview vs. Eagles

There’s the old saying that goes “no news is good news.” For the New York Giants, however, they’re always seems to have bad news coming their way prior to game time.

Big Blue (1-1), fresh off their win Monday night against St. Louis, will now look to take down their longtime rival Philadelphia Eagles. It would not be a preview story without talking about new injuries to key players on the team. Domenik Hixon, who hurt himself making a miraculous touchdown grab Monday night, tore his ACL for the second time in his career and will be out for the rest of the season. Mario Manningham suffered a concussion as well against the Rams, and has not practiced all week. For the passing game to be successful Sunday Eli Manning will have to rely on newly acquired Brandon Stokley and Michael Clayton (just signed today) to balance the offense passing-wise.

Osi Umenyiora, who has made headlines mostly off the field so far this season, spoke to the media for the first time this week. Umenyiora, who has dealt with injuries and contract disputes all offseason, says he’s close to getting back on the field. He didn’t practice this week but is optimistic he can bring his Pro Bowl caliber defense back to the Giants.

The Eagles (1-1), the big preseason free agent winner, have injury problems of their own. Star quarterback Michael Vick suffered a mild concussion in last week’s game against the Falcons. Philadelphia’s medical/coaching staff has been the most strict when it comes to returning from concussion-related injuries, usually not letting a player start a week after. However, Vick was cleared to play this week yesterday so it looks like he’ll be suiting up. The Giants defense should not let their guard down but should stay aggressive against the tough Eagles offense.

Both New York and Philadelphia need a leg up when it comes to the NFC East. Both are tied at 1-1 along with Dallas and all trail Washington at 2-0, so it’s majorly important to get victories within the division that may be a factor later in the season. The Giants must look past the multiple injuries and get their season back on track here.
