Huskers Fight Urge To Look Ahead
Posted By Karl Sannicks, II On Sep 24 2011 @ 12:07 pm In Nebraska | No Comments
Nebraska HC Bo Pelini insists that the Huskers (3-0) are taking it day by day and not looking forward to a Top 10 showdown with the Wisconsin Badgers in Madison next week.
Instead, Pelini says the process will continue to work and get better on both sides of the ball to enter the seasons first road game at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie, Wyoming Saturday as the Cowboys (3-0) host the Huskers.
The defense has plenty of work to do in order to stop an uncharacteristic start to the season that has seen them give up over 360 yards of total offense per contest and back to back 100-yard rushers on the ground. Something that had not happened to the Blackshirts since 2002.
QB Taylor Martinez comes into the Wyoming game with 384 yards, 6 TD’s on the ground and 490 passing yards for 3 TD’s, 2 INT’s. WR’s Jamal Turner and Kenny Bell have been the top two pass catchers for Martinez. Hopefully the Huskers will find the needed mix to get RB Rex Burkhead jump-started on the ground. So far this season, Burkhead has gained only 250 yards through 3 games.
The defense, which gave up three late 4th quarter touchdowns to Washington looks to improve and put the stop on an opponent as Big Red Nation is used to seeing on the field. Opponents are averaging 132 rushing yards and 232.7 passing against the Blackshirts. LB Lavonte David and S Damion Stafford lead the team in tackles with 32 and 26 respectively.
The Huskers will need to be aware of a Wyoming’s passing attack led by Frosh QB Brett Smith. Smith has passed for 797 yards on 61.8 percent passing. Smith will also run the ball as he has second on the team with 176 yards on the ground. Cowboy RB Ghaali Muhammad is the team’s leading rusher with 204 yards.
Look for the Huskers to exert themselves both on the ground and through the air Saturday. The Blackshirts will need to look sharp and though they are not looking forward, the Wisconsin Badgers are next folks! I sure am looking for a solid four quarters to prepare for the Big Ten road opener at Madison next week.
PREDICTION: Nebraska 52, Wyoming 17
