For the first time in a long time Virginia Tech is undefeated four weeks into the season. After defeating Marshall 30-10 on Saturday the 4-0 Hokies have momentum heading into the teeth of their schedule; but now, the questions surrounding Virginia Tech can no longer be ignored.
Watching the Hokies this season has been a tough task. They’ve shown the inability to put away lesser opponents. After their promising game against Appalachian State in Week 1, they struggled against ECU and Arkansas State, and then proceeded to leave the door open for the weak Thundering Herd of Marshall on Saturday.
Granted the final score read 30-10, but miscues, penalties, and turnovers for the Hokies kept the Herd in the game far too long.
Looking at the box score doesn’t tell the whole story of the game. 23-10 halftime lead; RB David Wilson ran for 132 yards and a touchdown, while backup RB Josh Oglesby ran for another 75 yards and two touchdowns. QB Logan Thomas finished the game with solid yardage (229 yards), but threw no touchdowns and an interception late in the game that kept the door open for the Herd.
It was that pick and a Wilson fumble that the coaches and some players were harking on after the game. The fact is: the Hokies need to be more consistent starting now.
“This is one of the most explosive teams we’ve had since I’ve been here,” RB Josh Oglesby said. “I’m not worried. But we’ve got to get it together now.”
“We’ve got to have all the parts working next week,” QB Logan Thomas added after the game.
These last four games may prove to be the most important of the season for the Hokies. Their players are working to become a cohesive group, and you can see the team beginning to come together. Still, the miscues and turnovers need to stop as soon as possible.
QB Logan Thomas has been the scapegoat for much of the offense’s problems during the early season; he did nothing during the Marshall game to quell his critics. When looking around the ACC, the teams that are in contention are the ones with solid quarterback play (FSU-Manuel, GT-Washington, Clemson-Boyd).
It’s been said time and time again over the last month, but for the Hokies to be more succesfull Thomas needs to step up; and there’s no time like the present with the Clemson game looming.
The Clemson Tigers have played two ranked teams early, beating the defending national champion Auburn Tigers and 11th ranked Florida State Seminoles in consecutive weeks.
This next week of practice and the game on Saturday will make, or break the Hokies season.
Coach Beamer payed tribute to the victims of the 1970 plane crash that killed 75 members of the Marshall family; Beamer had known several of the coaches and faculty members who lost their lives.
