The Chiefs Are Getting Closer

Well it looks like the Kansas City Chiefs do have a pulse. Unfortunately they were unable to pull out the victory. They had a chance to win it late, but their final drive was stalled when Matt Cassel’s screen pass was intercepted by Eric Weddle.
The Chiefs showed some heart in the second half. After being shut out in the first half they came out and scored on their first possession of the third quarter. The Cassel-to-Bowe connection tallied four catches for 67 yards including a couple of big third-down conversions. For the first time all season Cassel looked composed and in control. He finished the day completing 70.8% of his passes, which is his highest completion percentage of the year. He stepped up big in the fourth quarter during the team’s 80-yard touchdown drive, but it still was not enough.
The young Ryan Mathews got the job done against the Chiefs’ defense. He rushed for 98 yards and scored both of the Chargers’ touchdowns. The Chiefs weren’t able to stop him, but they were able to control Philip Rivers. Although he threw for 266 yards he was also intercepted twice, one by Kendrick Lewis and the other by Brandon Flowers. The Chiefs’ defense was running around the field all day and was able to sack Rivers twice. The defense made the biggest play of the Chiefs’ season when they stuffed Rivers on a fourth and one sneak with 1:26 remaining. The play was huge not only for the defense but for the entire organization. It gave them an opportunity to win and that’s a whole lot more than they can say about any other single play this entire season.
Even though the Chiefs did not come out of this game with a win there are a lot of things they can take with them moving on. They proved that they are a tough team and that they can come back from behind. The team began to find a rhythm and as different playmakers potentially emerge they will continue to build and progress one step at a time.
