Maybe if we make this pass blocking efficiency (PBE) thing sound a little more catchy, it will stick. I mean, hey, it’s a fair juxtaposition..Dirty Birds…Naughty By Nature…No? Crickets?
Ok, so maybe I’m not funny, but I felt a need to make light of the situation. In my last blog, I ended on a “sound the alarm, run the sirens” note and I don’t quite know if we need to take it THAT far.
Atlanta’s pass blocking has been horrendous the past three games. I know I sound like a broken record, but the more I do post-game analysis, review stats and consider match-ups, the more I see only one thing that will keep the Falcon’s from winning on Sunday. Protection.
Tavaris Jackson has been sacked 14 times this season. Matt Ryan has been sacked 13. There is relatively no area in which the Seahawks are stronger than than the Falcons. They SHOULD walk away with a win. But as we know as fans (especially after watching the Bombastic Bills last week) if one thing rings true in the NFL it’s — Any Given Sunday.
Atlanta’s linemen are getting beat in one-on-one match-ups. Plain and simple. If the linemen don’t make their blocks *see last Sunday vs. Bucs and the Defensive Backs make their stops *see last Sunday vs. Bucs, it’s not going to cut it. We need a solution and now. There’s no excuse for the lack in offensive production for Ryan and the Birds.
Atlanta is not getting blitzed and Matty Ice has been made a puddle on the turf. The Falcons have only given up 1 sack when Ryan has been rushed by more than five defenders. If our line can’t hold up in man-on-man match-ups, we may need to think about changes in either position or personnel. Jason Blalock is by far our best linemen, but perhaps he doesn’t have the right people surrounding him. It looks to me like these guys came into the season after a summer of sipping Mai Tais and floating in the pool. They either need to step up or someone else needs to step in.
Other than that, I’d say we’re in pretty good shape going into Qwest Field against Carroll’s Hawks. This is the perfect chance to get a road win and put everything back on track.

I ran track and cross country in college and sports have always been a huge part of my life. That being said, it was incredibly easy to decide what I wanted to "do with my life" when I got older. I combined the two things I am most passionate about in the world--sports and journalism-- and proceeded to pursue a career in sports entertainment.
