Saturday’s game ends in a 45-35 victory for Georgia Tech. This win puts Tech at 5-0, 2-0 ACC. This is their best start in over 20 years.
North Carolina State entered this game with one of the worst and most injured defenses in the ACC. The Wolfpack ranked 10th at best in the ACC in three major defensive statistical categories. This loss drops North Carolina State’s record to 2-3, 0-2 ACC.
The Yellow Jackets dominated most of first half quarter leading 21-0. The Wolfpack managed to get a break and scored two touchdowns in less than three minutes. NC State’s Mike Glennon put his team on the board with 1:15 left in the half with a pass to Jay Smith, and N.C. State came within a score on James Washington’s long touchdown run on their first play of the second half.
While Tech came away with the win, it was a low game statistically. Orwin Smith finished with just 74 yards, but scored three touchdowns on runs less than 15 yards.
Tevin Washington only completed four passes for Georgia Tech, but two of them resulted in touchdowns, a short 9 yards to David Sims and 38 yards to Roddy Jones. Isaiah Johnson returned an interception 34 yards for a score to help the Yellow Jackets pull away.
NC State’s James Washington rushed for a career-high 131 yards. A 46-yard touchdown run put the score at 21-14, the Wolfpack down by one score, forcing Tech to break out the offense that the nation has seen the past four weeks.
A 13-play drive ends with another touchdown as Smith takes a pitch from Washington and dives across the goal line.
N.C. State’s next offensive play results in a 34 yard score by Isaiah Johnson as he picks off Glennon’s pass.
In the final 34 seconds of the game, the Wolfpack scored two touchdowns. The last one came with 20 seconds left. A fumble by Synjyn Days all for a 33 yard return by Brandan Bishop.
Georgia Tech takes the field next Saturday against Maryland.
