Fantasy Week 5 Waivers

Posted By David Willow On Oct 4 2011 @ 7:14 pm In Fantasy Football | No Comments

Another week another injury, but thankfully this week’s group of unfortunates haven’t continued the trend of season ending injuries. The most notable injuries have been to Andre Johnson, who looked to have a major injury to his leg, but later reports suggested it was minor hamstring injury that will keep him out for around 2-3 weeks. The Steelers’ Rashard Mendenhall was also hindered by a hamstring injury that could keep him out of his week 5 match up. Vincent Jackson suffered an undisclosed leg injury, though he was able to return to the game in a limited fashion, he will likely be tagged as questionable this week with a probability that he will play barring any setbacks. The pick’ens are getting slimmer by the week so stay on your toes fantasy owners. Here’s week 5 waivers.

Stevan Ridley – Ridley blew up against the Raiders this week for 97 yards on just 10 carries with a TD. The increase may have been due to an ankle injury suffered by Danny Woodhead. Nevertheless, Ridley made his presence felt for the second straight week. Ridley is another player who seems to be blowing up quicker than predicted. New England has wanted to pull back the reins just a bit and employ the run to be more balanced on offense, though that may change when Aaron Hernandez returns. Either way Ridley could be taking snaps in place of Woodhead if he cannot go next week and could begin taking snaps from a less talented BenJarvis Green-Ellis soon as well. Available in 85% of leagues currently. Hottest pick up right now.

Ryan Torain – I warned on Twitter, that Hightower owners should be on alert, I just didn’t think it would be for Torain to take away carries. Mike Shanahan ominously alluded to the change late last week, saying he really likes Torain, and he apparently meant it. This has all the signs of committee and could be a nightmare for fantasy owners, but Torain ran well with power and one step cuts that Shanahan adores in his runners. He looks like he will be in line for a good amount of carries after the BYE week and could be the red zone guy for the team. Bottom line, Shanahan is gushing over this former draft gem of his, and owners may have to hold on to both Hightower and Torain for the next 2 weeks until thing become a little clearer. Available in 78% of leagues currently.

Isaac Redman – Rashard Mendenhall suffered a hamstring injury, and currently it is being reported that it is not a serious injury, but from the sounds of it Mendenhall will be limited even if he plays this next week. With Mewelde Moore hurt, the load falls on Redman, who has run for 4.8 yards per carry this season compared to Mendenhall’s 3.0 yards per carry. Redman could make the most of the time given and has looked like the better back this season running with more power than the incumbent starter to carve out more playing time. Available in 90% of leagues.

Jacoby Jones – With Andre Johnson going down in a scary way, fantasy owners should grab Jones. However, don’t expect too much out of Jones who has consistently underwhelmed with the Texans, but has average 92.5 yards when given starter’s snaps though, and is worth a look if your team is in need of a WR for a BYE week or an injury filler with Johnson looking to miss 2-3 weeks. Available in 74% of leagues currently.

Jared Cook – There was a lot expected from Cook this preseason after a great finish to last year, but the excellent play of Kenny Britt out shined the young tight end. In the first game without Britt, Cook had a 80 yard reception and ended the day with 2 receptions for 93 yards and a TD. Take away the 80 yard catch and it’s a less than pedestrian day. Add Cook in wait-and-see mode for a BYE week filler with some upside, but until we see more consistent play don’t reach for him. Available in 70% of leagues.

Victor Cruz – Cruz followed his breakout performance from last week with a surprising 6 receptions for 98 yards against Arizona. This was due in most part to the benching of Mario Manningham. It’s a dicey situation, Manningham won’t likely lose his starting job permanently, but until the fog clears in New York it may be a good idea to stash Cruz if you can afford to roster him. Available in 63% of leagues currently.

Pierre Garcon – After 3 weeks of anemic play, the Colts got a spark with 2 long TDs from Garcon, and the team seemed to play a bit different with Curtis Painter throwing the ball. Garcon did have one of his patented drops in the game, and only had 2 receptions. He’s worth a stash and see pick up. Available in 46% of leagues currently.

Curtis Painter
– I’m not big on rostering too many Colt players in fantasy, but if you are an owner needing a back up in the coming weeks for a BYE week and nothing is out there, then Painter may be a serviceable play against KC this week. He won’t wow you with numbers, but he has a better arm and better understanding of the Colt’s system. Available in 93% of leagues.
