My Two Cents on Two Quarters (since that’s all the Falcons played on Sunday)

Well, we won!

And like I said last week, a W is, in fact, A W.

Unfortunately for the Birds from the Dirty South, the ‘Hawks from Seattle were sleepless in the first half but rallied in the second.

This was definitely the tale of two halves for the Falcons and in watching the game I couldn’t help but think this must be what a guy feels like when he meets a girl inebriated at a club thinking she’s a 10 and wakes up the next morning only to see a too caked, too baked 6 staring back at him still wearing a glitter dress with 5inch heels.

In the first half, Atlanta was actually playing fairly mistake-free. Matty Ice connected with TG for a TD in quarter one and Roddy White, Julio Jones and even Jacquizz Rodgers were getting touches. Jones, our back from Bama, was definitely rolling on Sunday with eleven catches for 127 yards. Seattle’s corners looked more like video game stars in Madden ’12…when the 8-year old on the controller drops the sticks and runs out of the room.

The offensive line wasn’t playing great, but they weren’t playing horrible and that in and of itself is a vast improvement from last week against the Bucs. Regardless of the issues still alarmingly present on both sides of the ball for the Falcons, Atlanta was doing something they haven’t done much of this season… WINNING.

After two quarters, ATL had a 21-7 lead and Ryan was playing efficiently, Turner was picking up yards and things were actually going pretty smoothly.

And then the second half started…

I couldn’t help but start rubbing my eyes and doing a double-take after the start of the third. It just seemed absurd, impossible really, that this was the same team I had watched a mere twenty minutes ago.

Tavaris Jackson started throwing the ball all over the field and Marshawn Lynch was running the ball off screens from Seattle’s no-huddle offense and little by little Atlanta’s lead decreased.

I think the Falcon’s defense may STILL be in the locker room today…they sure as heck didn’t come out on the field after the whistle blew to begin the second half on Sunday. Not only did we have no D, but our O-line had once again become the “Oh-No” line from the past few weeks.

What may have been even more astonishing than the way the Falcons allowed the Seahawks back in the game was the fact that they actually ended up winning. Now let’s not take anything away from Pete Carroll who as we all know has a masterful ability to make quick and efficient adjustments (on and off the field). Carroll definitely came out with a counter-attack to Atlanta’s “Michael Turner runs on first down” offense and the ‘Hawks nearly escaped with a victory.

Regardless of the end result, this game showcased the good, bad and ugly of the Atlanta Falcons. They may have had enough to barely squeeze by Seattle on Sunday but against Green Bay this week it won’t nearly be that simple.
