MIAMI’S BIG 3 WILL PLAY ON SATURDAY

The three players that were the talk of the NBA for most of last season, will make their first on-court appearance together since losing to the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals back in June.  Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, and Chris Bosh will play in an all-star charity game on the campus of FIU(Florida International University) on Saturday night.  Unfortunately, it’s starting to look like this could be the only time the public will get to see these guys play together this year.

The NBA Lockout is now officially threatening the cancellation of the 2011-2012 season.  The preseason has already been cancelled and according to NBA Commissioner David Stern, if an agreement is not close by this weekend, some regular season games will be gone as well.

In addition, some players have already agreed on contracts to play overseas, and others are very close.  Spurs guard Tony Parker will be playing in France for around $2000 a month.  That is for a team that he partially owns.  Kobe Bryant looks to be headed to Italy for a much bigger number.  How about over $3 million for a ten game contact.  I’m sure this not what Stern had in mind when he talked about globalizing the NBA, but is certainly a consequence of it.

Stars like LeBron, Kobe, and DWade are recognized around the world.  It is actually worth big money to other markets for them to play over there, even if it is only for a short time.  Don’t worry, the biggest stars won’t stay away from the US, but there could be some lower and mid-level defections, especially if the owners are able to cut costs like they would like to.

The biggest concern of all though is the popularity of the game.  What type of backlash will the public have if an entire season is cancelled?  The NFL was able to avoid this, while the NHL was not.  The NBA slots in between those leagues in terms of popularity, but is also just coming off one of the most watched seasons in their history.  Has the league made a miscalculation that will haunt them for the next five years?  The next five days might tell us.
