Big Apple Turnover: INT Kills Giants Rally vs. Seattle, 36-25

The Giants finally fell victim to what plagued them last season and their late game rally fell short.

Big Blue, short handed this week without Brandon Jacobs and Justin Tuck, was driving down the field in the final minutes of the game, but an errant throw by Eli Manning was deflected and Brandon Browner picked off 94 yards to seal the game for the Seahawks 36-25 at MetLife Stadium Sunday.

Quarterback Charlie Whitehurst, in place of Tavaris Jackson who was injured in the third quarter, stepped in seamlessly and found Doug Baldwin to regain the lead for good for Seattle (2-3). Baldwin (136 yards, 1 TD) , an undrafted rookie free agent, leads the team with 20 receptions this season.

Eli Manning had his worst performance of the season so far despite throwing for 420 yards and three touchdowns. Manning had his first turnover-plagued game that reminded Giants fans of his many struggles through his career. His three interceptions were a season-high that fans hope he doesn’t reach again this year.

New York’s (3-2) defense struggled and gave up an early lead to the Seahawks who drove down the field in the first two minutes of the game. Big Blue responded with an Eli Manning touchdown to tight end Jake Ballard to tie the game at 7. Marshawn Lynch (12 carries, 90 yards) after a 47 yard run to the one yard line, punched it in and retook the lead 14-7 into the second quarter.

Turnovers dominated the first half. The Giants fumbled the ball in their own territory and Manning was picked off. On the Seattle side,  two fumbles in the red zone prevented them from padding the lead and an interception by Aaron Ross late in the half allowed Manning to hit Hakeem Nicks with 11 seconds left for a diving reception to tie the game at 14.

The Seahawks took a two point lead after DJ Ware was tackled in the end zone. A 51 yard field goal pushed the lead back to 19-14. Victor Cruz (8 catches, 161 yards) made an amazing grab between two players and tipped it up himself and beat the defenders down the field for a Giants touchdown to make it 22-19.

After field goals on both sides made it 25-22, Whitehurst hit Baldwin with a 27 yard score to give the Seahawks the lead. The Browner interception came after the Giants had set themselves up in prime position for their third straight fourth quarter rally into the red zone.

The road does not look easier for the Giants, as they play the resurgent Buffalo Bills next Sunday. The turnovers must go away if Big Blue wants to keep up with Ryan Fitzpatrick and company.
