Canes Fall To Hokies In Final Minute

BLACKSBURG, VA — Hurricane fans thought that once Tyrod Taylor left Virginia Tech and Christian Ponder left FSU they wouldn’t have to worry about being tortured by mobile quarterbacks. Miami, meet Logan Thomas.

Thomas, who had been playing the role of understudy to Taylor for the previous two seasons, called his own number on fourth-and-1 and put the Hokies up for good. Trailing by four with a minute left to play, Thomas faked right, then left, then walked untouched into the end zone as Miami linebacker Sean Spence threw his hands up in disgust.

It was a fitting end to a frantic football game.

Miami was left for dead after being dominated in the first half, but the Hurricanes stormed back in the second half, scoring on five straight possessions. Miami once again leaned on Lamar Miller to carry the load, and carry the load he did. Miller ran for 166 yards and a touchdown, the score that put Miami up 35-31 with 2:51 left to play.

Lamar Miller has rushed for 100+ yards in every game this season

Miller barely touched the ball in the first half, recording only six carries as the Canes relied on the passing game. Shockingly, Jacory Harris failed to throw an interception in the contest, marking back-to-back games that the Hurricanes’ signal caller hasn’t turned the ball over.

Harris’ day went unnoticed as most of the focus afterwards was on coach Al Golden’s controversial first quarter call.

Trailing 7-0 early in the first quarter, Miami had driven the ball deep into Hokie territory until the drive stalled. Instead of trying for the field goal, Golden opted to call for the fake. The feeble attempt was forcibly stuffed, leaving the Canes with nothing to show for the drive.

In a game that no one figured would be a shootout, points would likely be hard to come by. That’s what makes Golden’s decision so vexing. It probably wouldn’t have ever been questioned if the Canes had held on to win the game, but they didn’t. They lost by three. Probably want that field goal chance back now, huh Al?

In the next two weeks, Miami takes its Heisman candidate running back — Lamar Miller — and a suspect run defense into North Carolina and Georgia Tech. While the game against the Tarheels is most definitely a win-able one, the battle looming with Georgia Tech is no doubt causing ulcers in the stomachs of the defensive coaching staff already. Coach Golden inherited quite a mess when he took the helm for the Hurricanes, and hopefully he can keep things from unraveling completely in the coming weeks.
