Cardinals Delivering Exciting Baseball

[1]I’ve experienced it and I can say first hand that there’s nothing quite as exhilarating in sports as watching Cardinals baseball at Busch Stadium on a cool October evening in St. Louis.   The Cardinals return home tonight for game three of the National League Championship Series with the potential to close the series out against the Brewers. If the Redbirds sweep the three games at home they win the NL pennant and head to the World Series.

That could be a tall order against the Brewers who boasts one the most intimidating duos in all of baseball in Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun. The Brewers led the league in HR with 185. The duo did most of the damage in Milwaukee’s 9-6 victory in game one at Miller Park on Monday behind pitcher Zack Greinke.

As intimidating as the duo may be the Cardinals are more than capable of accomplishing the feat. The Redbirds swept the Brewers in Milwaukee at the end of August right around the time they began current surge.  They took two of three games at Busch Stadium later that week against the Brewers.  Each team won nine of 18 games during the regular season.

The Cards, intimidating in their own right, led the league in runs scored this year (762) and outscored their opponents by a total of 76 runs during the regular season.  Their offensive surge near the end of the season that catapulted them past the Atlanta Braves and into the playoffs was a collective effort from the entire team. That collective effort has continued throughout the 2011 playoffs as such players as David Freese, Lance Berkman and of course Albert Pujols has presented some difficult match ups for Phillies’ and Brewers’ pitchers this post season.

In game two in Milwaukee the Cardinals once again displayed that collective effort as they pounded Brewers’ starter Shaun Marcum and a variety of relief pitchers for a 12-3 victory in a 17 hit barrage. Pujols, despite his 12 hits in the post season had not factored much in the scoring for the Cardinals this post season. That all changed Monday when he went 4-5 with a HR and three doubles and 5 RBI’s (his second four hit night this post season).  The Cardinals, as they did in game two of NLDS against the Phillies, seized home field advantage with the win and an opportunity to wrap the series up at home.

This one promises to be another pitchers’ duel as Cardinals’ ace Chris Carpenter gets the nod tonight against Brewers’ right hander Yovani Gallardo. While Gallardo had a good year with the Brewers going 17-10 he struggled against the Cardinals in 2011. In four starts against the Redbirds he went 1-3 with a5.70 ERA. He’s 1-7 in his career versus the Cardinals.  Pujols experienced the most success against Gallardo as he batted .444 against him (12 for 27) with four HR and 11 RBI’s.

Despite his “down year”  in 2011 (11-9 record) Carpenter has gone 10-2 after a 1-7 start and recaptured the control and mastery that he displayed prior to 2011.   In case anyone was questioning whether or not Carpenter had lost a little “zip” on his fastball he pitched a 1-0 shutout masterpiece in game five of the NLDS against Roy Halladay and the Phillies.

Brewers' pitcher Yovani Gallardo is 1-7 career record against Cardinals

If truth be told the Cardinals have been playing “game 7” type of games for the past month and have excelled going 27-12 since September 1.   This series has already delivered some intense and exciting moments and tonight’s game will be no different in another edition of October baseball in St. Louis.
