Strange week for the Dallas Stars. The New York Rangers sent Sean Avery down to the farm affecting his contract which of course the Stars are still partially responsible for, which in turn dropped the Stars payroll below the cap floor.
To bring the Stars back up to at least the league floor, Joe Nieuwendyk today traded future considerations to the Minnesota Wild for checking left winger Eric Nystrom. The 28 year old Nystrom has previously played four seasons with the Calgary Flames and all 82 games with the Wild last season. Drafted 10th overall by the Flames in 2002, he’s managed 23 goals and 51 points in 286 regular season games through last season. He’s under contract through next season at $1.4 million per.
His Swedish born father Bob played 900 regular season games and 157 playoff games through the 1970s and 80s with the New York Islanders and became known through his career for scoring big goals, of course scoring the Cup winner vs the Flyers for the Islanders 1st Championship back in 1980.
