Rams Prepare For Major Challenge Against Packers
Posted By Chaz Ingram On Oct 14 2011 @ 8:34 pm In St. Louis Rams | No Comments
This Sunday’s Rams’ game against the Green Bay Packers will pit two teams headed in two opposite directions. At 0-4 the Rams are in search of their first win and headed for a disappointing season. Meanwhile, the Packers are an offensive machine at 5-0 and reigning Super Bowl Champions. `You can say this is David vs. Goliath. Rams’ fans wait anxiously to see if they will see the Rams’ team that looked absolutely horrible in starting the season 0-4 or will they see a team rejuvenated from a bye week and hungry to turn around their season.
The Rams are obviously in desperate need of a cure to their offensive and defensive woes and I’m not so sure that the Packers will serve as the right team to find the solution. With the arrival of offensive coordinator Josh McDaniel Rams fans were hoping for an improvement from rookie of the year quarterback Sam Bradford and the offense. Uhh, we’re still waiting.
Even McDaniel didn’t envision this mess. The Rams rank 31st in the league in scoring averaging a miniscule 11.5 points per game. The defense is just as bad, also ranked 31st in the league giving up 28.3 points per game and 404.5 yards per game.
The Packers on the other hand are averaging 344 yards and 34.6 points per game. QB Aaron Rodgers is leading the league in completion percentage at 71.7% with 14 TD’s and more than 1,700 yards. The Packers receiving corps of Greg Jennings, Jordy Nelson and Jermichael Finley may be the best in the league.
Just like the rest of the league the Rams face a tough assignment this Sunday against the Packers potent offense. However, the assignment for the Rams may be even tougher simply because they will be playing with three new cornerbacks in Josh Gordy, Rod Hood and Brian Jackson . The banged up Rams’ secondary is without its’ top three corners for the rest of the season due to injuries. If these recent acquisitions are not up to speed as far as coverage assignments are concerned they will be exploited by the explosiveness of the Packers receivers.
If the Rams stand a chance against the Packers this Sunday it will be in the passing game. The Packers defense ranks 31st in the league against the pass giving up 300 yards per game. Green Bay is surrendering 75.8 yards per game against the run. To give themselves a chance the Rams should focus on ball control and limit the number of opportunities given to Rodgers and his offense.
