If I told you at the beginning of the season that the Buffalo Bills would beat New England, Philadelphia and would be 4-2 going into their bye week you would probably think I was crazy. Well luckily for Bills fans that is all true. Unfortunately for the Bills they are no longer in first place following their 27-24 loss against the New York Giants coupled with the Patriots win against the Cowboys. The good news is that they still sit 5th in the conference and are far from that team they dressed on the field last year. To think; how close they could be from still being undefeated! A combined 6 points from their 2 losses is the difference between a 4-2 Bills team, to a 6-0 Bills team.
Mistakes! That’s how to summarize this loss. A late Ryan Fitzpatrick interception may have sealed the loss for the Bills but the defense again was the real problem. Drayton Florence with 2 pass interference calls, one of which came on the Giants last series was one of the reasons Buffalo defense couldn’t get off the field. Clean it up boys! If you have a dozen of small mistakes, it will eventually create a huge one and will lead to a loss. There were a few keys injuries on defense this week; Kyle Williams, Shawne Merriman and Chris Kelsay. I can say they did the best they could with what they had, but sometimes doing best is not good enough.
Buffalo’s offense had their moments of greatness early on in the game. An 80 yard touchdown run from Fred Jackson followed by a 60 yard touchdown pass to Naaman Roosevelt gave Buffalo an early 7 point lead, but things seemed to slow down from there. Jackson added 41 more yards to his total and Roosevelt never caught another pass.
I never feel like writing much after a Bills loss and my views are always low, therefore I will keep this one short. I will leave you with a few words of encouragement.
- We’ll get em next time
- We’re not in first, but not in last
- There’s always next week
- At least we’re not the Dolphins
- They still beat the Patriots
- They kept them from scoring 30
- Buffalo won’t lose next week
Bills take this bye week to heal a few injuries, go over the fundamentals of defense and prepare themselves for their Washington Redskins on Hallowe’en. I will be giving you my thoughts on the Toronto Series in my next blog. Stay tuned!
